Difference between T41 and T40p

Anyone know the main differences between a T41 adn T40p?

I won an auction for a T41 but it was labeled as having the 1400X1050 resolution which it did not. They would like to send me the T40p with that resolution for the same price. What would I be missing with the T40p? Not sure which one I should keep.

well if all else is equal (same size HD and all that) then i would take the T40p unless the T40 doesn't have warranty and the other does.

The differences between them is the fact that the T41 uses PC2700 (DDR333) RAM while the other uses PC2100 (DDR266) and the fact that the P in T40 means POWER

(well not really) The T40p has a more powerful video card so if you're doing games or CAD then yeah it would be nice to have. If you want cool and long lasting then you might be better off with the T41. If the screen is an absolute necessity but you don't need the power you can upgrade the screen in the T41 to match the T40s SXGA+ but it will cost about $120 or so more. I would return it and get a T41 with the right screen if you have to have it.

The T40 you got most likely has a Radeon 7500 graphics chip for the XGA display. Most T40/T41 have the Radeon 9000 with the SXGA display. The T4xp had the best graphics chipset. I would ask for a T41 with the SXGA screen just to have a newer computer (the T41 also has the HDD head retraction protection system). You could ask for the serial number of the T40p to see how old it is. It is out of warranty but so, probably is the T41.

Man, this is tough. They do not have any T41 with the better graphics as it was a typo. I got it for $360. Maybe I should just go with the T40p. Seems like a good buy for a laptop with the decent video card and resolution. On the other hand, this one has a few months left on the warranty and it is a good laptop so far. Tough call for me.

Are the motherboard issues that I hear of both happen on T40p and T41?

As far as I'm aware, "most" (by far) in terms of manufacturing volumes have the Radeon 7500 + XGA configuration.

The motherboard issues affect both T40p and T41. The only other features I can think or are that the T40p will likely have bluetooth, if that matters. The T41 allows you to use passphrase encryption for passwords, although I see that as more of a pain than an asset. The big item is the SXGA+ resolution in the T40p. Some people think that is better; some people don't like it. The T41s all habe gigabit ethernet, but only some of the T40s do. That is important if you have the kind of network that supports it.

I would take the T40p over the T41 for the better GPU and SXGA+ LCD. The hard drive, processor, and RAM can be upgraded much more easily.

well i would probably keep the T41 just because it's an overal faster machine. As i said tho, if the graphics is important to you (maybe you're a gamer) then the T40p would be better at that.

Just have the seller ship you the T40p for another $360. Decide later and sell the left over one here. Neither would last a day at that price.

(I'd take the T40p, assuming condition is equal.)

Very interesting thought. I may bring that up to them and see. When i called they stated that I got a very good price so I doubt they will sell me the other one. I noticed they changed it to 'buy it now' $525. I think they realized they were selling them too low.

Ok, got the T40p. Here are the specs. It is not under warranty and the T41 is under warranty until December. How does the warranty upgrade work. Is it costly to purchase additional warranty and is it worth it?

If a machine is out of warranty, it will cost approx. $170 to extend the warranty another year - from the date the last warranty expired! So, if the T40p's warranty expired in March 2007, you would have another 7 months for $170. Not really worth it. (Machines in warranty cost less to extend, about $110 or for one year.)

You could buy a two year extended warranty for about $250 or so, the same conditions apply.

If the machine checks out - no issues at all (I mean turn it on and shake it, try both USB ports, etc.) then I wouldn't get the warranty. The worst that could happen is the motherboard. If that goes, you can replace it for about $200, from eBay. Even the high res. LCD would be less than a 1 yr. warranty to replace.

I'd keep the money in the bank until something actually broke.

If you catch them at the right time you can get a deal. I got my t40p about a week ago for $375 to replace my dead R40. Great machine, I like it quite a bit.

One other thing that I noticed. The T40P has a high pitch noise where the T41 does not. Does anyone know anything about this? Its not indicative of a future problem is it? Sorry to be so detailed here. I just want to be sure I choose the right one. Right now, I'm leaning towards the T40p.

Can you pinpoint the source of the noise? Are you getting the noise when it's on batteries or plugged in? Does it continue if you turn off the display with Fn+F7?

Well, when I turn the monitor only off (fn + f3), it does not get rid of the sound. When I go into standby, the sound is gone. What does standby do - shutdown monitor and Hard Drive? maybe it's the hard drive? I downloaded a SMART application and the hard drive looks good. Maybe its the 7200 rpm vs the 5400?

However, this high pitch sound is not a normal hard drive sound. It does sound like the monitor but the sound does not go away when I turn it off.

The power supply circuitry is another possibility -- that's why you should try with battery and with the power supply.

To me that indicates a problem with the power circuit. Could you try the machine in a different outlet either at home or work? I am just curious because I had a Toshiba that did that to me, but only on a certain outlet in my house. I now think I had too much stuff on that circuit.

I was referring to the outlet and everything else on that circuit. I was NOT referring to the laptop's power circuitry.

However since it happens on both battery and on AC power than I would suspect the motherboard.

Is your power jack loose, or i it a nice connection (the one on the laptop)?

Ok, thanks all for your help. I really do appreciate it! I've decided to go with the T41. I'm contacting them tomorrow to let them know. The warranty, better wireless card and no high pitch sound all convinced me to keep it. I would like the better graphics but would rather have the newer pc that seems to run a little better. Anyhow, thanks again!
