T60 - Not able to see the SPD information of my RAM
T60 - Not able to see the SPD information of my RAM
Hi all,
I have just upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 2GB (2 x 1 GB sticks of Mushkin DDR2 PC5300-667).
When running CPU-Z and also Sandra, the SPD information for the RAM can't be seen. I've also run memtest86 and went through 2 passes with no errors, but when I try to display SPD information I get the message that my SMBus controller is not known. The device manager however shows that it's working fine.
I've updated to the latest drivers and am also using the latest versions of CPU-Z, Sandra and memtest86. I did ask about this on Mushkin's forum and was assured that with no errors on the RAM and no effect on stability I should be fine and it could just be a bug with the programs for my motherboard.
Has anyone else with the T60 experienced the same thing? Is there a way to get this fixed? Am I worrying over nothing? I had not looked for SPD info before this so I can't tell whether it's my hardware or the RAM that's responsible for this.

I contact Franck Delatre (a friend of mine) who made CPU-Z. He tells me that's happen with all Lenovo laptops. They do something to awoid this access...
The laptop still read the SPD to set the memory speed. I use 2 x 1 GB DDR2-667 CL from G.Skill and they work fine in CL4.

Thank you for sharing this info, it's good to know that it's not some problem with my T60Pascal_TTH wrote:I contact Franck Delatre (a friend of mine) who made CPU-Z. He tells me that's happen with all Lenovo laptops. They do something to awoid this access...

But I wonder why they would do something like that. After all, we should be allowed to access this sort of information. Maybe we should contact Lenovo to see if this is something that can be changed.

He tells me he is still wondering why Lenovo bore them self hiding this information. According to him, it takes some engineering time to do so... For what ? Reason is a mystery ! Reading SPD is not risky. It starts with the first Lenovo designed Thinkpad. Before, it was working fine with T4x.
