Refurb and upgrade T22

#1 Post by rikkisix » Wed Aug 15, 2007 10:25 pm

Hi
First off, let me just say that if I violate any terms; its not because I didn't read the Terms, I just don't quite get them. Sorry for any mess ups in advance.
Am giving my T22 to a friend and it needs to be refurbed and upgraded to XP from 98 2nd edition. And a really good Antivirus program needs to be installed as well.
I sort of know that this is not the best of plans but he wants the T22 to learn on.
Cost is of some concern but not really a big deal. We are in North New Jersey, Bergen County and neither of us knows enough to fix it on our own.
1st question: can this be done or is it a waste of time?
2nd question: Is there anyone in Bergen County, New Jersey or New York City who is qualified to do this?
Thanks for the help!
Rikki

Hello, I just want to clarify what you are requesting; does the T22 need upgraded on the equipment or the software? I didn't know any T22's came with 98, mine originally shipped with Windows 2000 and someone along the way put XP Professional on it. It runs beautifully. They also put Symantec Professional AV on this, but there are several free AV programs that you can download that work really well, like AVG or Avast. I guess you can look in your yellow pages for computer software/hardware stores, or if you have Geek Squad, they can advise on the new software - which you will have to buy.

Speaking as a moderator, I'm not sure what forum rule that you think you may be violating, but I don't see anything wrong with your questions or post.

As far as upgrading the system from Win98SE to WinXP, technically you would need an XP COA to be legal (I'm assuming that the T22 only has an original Win98SE certificate). There's an outside chance that you would also have to upgrade the system's BIOS. Check your system's existing version and consult this site:

T22 BIOS updates

You (or your friend) would be better off with XP instead of 98, so no, I don't think it's a waste of time. To install XP and all of the current updates might take two or three hours if you have a high-speed net connection. There are several good freeware and low-cost antivirus programs. You can try NOD32, a forum advertiser (see link at the top of the page). Probably more importantly is the amount of memory you have in the system. I would suggest that you have at least 384MB; the maximum is 512MB for the T22.

Sorry, but I'm on the wrong coast to answer your second question.

Hi,
Yes, it came factory reconditioned with 98. As far as I can tell the whole thing could use a make over. Software, hardware everything. It got/has a very nasty virus or something that is just messing with the total running of everything. I haven't touch it since it started acting up and don't want to.
So Geek Squad is OK then?

I personally have never used Geek Squad, I live to learn about my Thinkpad  and the lovely people here are so willing to teach. However, I know many people who have used them, they are not cheap but they do come to your location.

It sounds like now is the perfect time to upgrade the HD to a larger one, put XP & some AV on it and you're good to go. No need to deal with the virus on the present HD

Thanks so much for everyone's help! I actually really like my T22 better than the Dell I just got and will miss it but I need the Dell for work. Doesn't make sense to me why I can't use the T22 but the Dell was free and its what they want us to use..........so.
Thanks again!

You will need and XP disk to do the up grade so it just might be better to format the hard drive and do a fresh install. This will also remove the virus and let your friend have a clean system. As said, there are plenty of free antivirus/firewall programs out there.
