Found: Ultrabay 2000 DVD burner

See topic. I believe this called a "multi-burner" by IBM. As long as it can burn a DVD I am happy.

edit: I assembled one from parts purchased. It seems to work acceptably.

heres another with 10$ shipping

just type T20 DVD (you could change the model numbers around and see if you can find a cheaper one or watch some auctions)

these models also use ultrabay 2000 A20, A21, A22, T20, T21, T22, X20, X21, X22, X23, X24

If you already have an Ultrabay 2000 optical drive, an alternative is to buy a non-Ultrabay burner (12.7mm height) and transfer the rails (caddy) and IDE connector. It also requires trimming the front bezel in order to fit the "notch" on the right side. I've bought both UJ-820 and UJ-840 drives and installed them in T2x systems. No, it won't look "stock" with the alterations done to the bezel but it still writes DVDs fine.

Thanks jamers... I haven't been actually searching for Ultrabay devices on ebay, just generic drives. These two are a bit pricy, but not bad.

Ray, I did know about that possibility, although thanks for confirming. I do not have a Ultrabay 2000 optical drive (I have a zip drive but I doubt the connector would fit opticals), although I don't suppose the cheapest kind would set me back a whole lot. However, I haven't seen many DVD-RWs close for less than $50 shipped to here, and at that price plus the donor drive, plus the hassle, the savings of going generic aren't really worth it IMO.

edit: I opened the zip drive up. The adapter PCB does seem like a standard 50 pin adapter that you'd also use for an optical drive. Can anyone confirm that they are the same? Seems like it's back to ebay for me.

yet another edit: I realised that while the adapter may fit, the caddy is not shaped correctly for optical drives. Bummer.
