Ultrabay 2000 CD-ROM Drive

#1 Post by jecoled » Wed Oct 27, 2004 11:11 am

Has anyone had problems with the 24X Ultrabay Drive? I've had to replace the CD Drive in my A22e twice in a little over a year, and I don't even use it that much. Are these Drives just cheap and/or just inherently faulty? I get a brief indicator light when I load a CD, but then the drive quits. This occurs with all type s of CDs - purchased Audio, CDRs and CDRWs.

Thanks

As far as I know all A3x machines have two bays. Does the same error occur if you use the other bay? The one I have fits on both sides. Possibly the connector on one bay is bad and trashes/breaks the drive or, the connector on that side could be faulty. If you still have warranty on the machine take it it and have it serviced. If you no longer have warranty opening the machine removing all parts and reassembling (i.e. reseating all connectors) might be an option. There is an excellent reference manual available in the technical documentation section of the IBM site. Do NOT open the machine without the manual!

A22e Ultrabay CD-Rom problem

#3 Post by jecoled » Wed Oct 27, 2004 11:49 pm

Thanks Khamsin.

My A22e has only a single Drive Bay. I'm out of warranty on this machine so I'll have to look into out-of-pocket Servicing. It just seems odd that I am looking at a third CD-ROM drive for this computer. If anyone has had a simiar problem, I'd appreciate hearing about it. I've already uninstalled the drive via Device Manager and tried a new driver, all to no avail.

Thanks,

jecoled
