Fresh XP Install - Ethernet Controller?
Fresh XP Install - Ethernet Controller?
I was given a laptop at school last fall and I reformatted yesterday to start fresh again for school. When I started XP, drivers were missing of course so I went to the T60p's website and downloaded the needed drivers.
However, I cannot get my wireless driver to work! In the Devices manager window, Ethernet Controller has a yellow icon next to it. I installed the Wired controller without too much of a hassle.
I downloaded the wireless driver, opened the EXE and everything was fine. But no wireless card can be detected, and the device manager still says "Ethernet controller" with the yellow icon.
I just re-install XP again to see if that would fix it, but nothing worked. I have only installed the Wired driver until I have some suggestions from you all.

Windows XP Pro
I wasn't sure this was t60p specific or not...sorry if wrong forum!
Any ideas?

There are two wireless driver : one for Intel ProWireless and the other for Thinkpad Wireless. Try the other one ! A clue : If you have Centrino logo sticker, it's the Intel one.

Well maybe my system was a fluke but i have a Centrino sticker but mine was built and shipped with a Atheros card.Pascal_TTH wrote:... A clue : If you have Centrino logo sticker, it's the Intel one.
Anyways, as stated above - you probably just installed the wrong driver. There's lots of wireless cards for the T60, well maybe only 3 or something.

You have try Intel PRO/Wireless 2200bg, 2915abg, 3945bg, 3945abg, 4965ag, 4965agn Mini PCI adapter and ThinkPad 802.11ab, 802.11bg and 802.11abg, 802.11abgn wireless LAN ?
Did your T60 have WWAN ? If you got a 4 or 5 mm *box* on the right side of the screen, it's WWAN from Cingular, Verizon or Vodafone.
I think the Intel PRO/1000 LAN adapter is directly recognize by Windows XP.

Hello - I'm sorry if this was an oversight, but when you said you downloaded and installed the software, did you locate the directory where the software was extracted to? Most, if not all, the software extracts to a directory, i.e. c:\drivers\winxp, etc., but normally does not "kick off" the setup process. If you have not tried this, locate the directory and run the setup or installation program.Leemac wrote:2007WLY is the model number...
I just installed all the windows updates, then tried reinstalling the drivers. No luck.
Another quick thought would be to disable your NIC from the BIOS upon boot so the OS does not see it, and uninstall any network software used. Then Enable the NIC and once in Windows run the setup program again. You may want to run a registry cleaner before this. I would recommend www.ccleaner.com's registry cleaner.
Good luck!
John
*Use this link to download software to identify your NIC

*I believe this is the software you are looking for.

Also, under Services set the Wireless Zero to Manual and stop this service if you want to use Intel or Thinkpad software to manage your connections.
I ran the NIC identification app, and it does not detect anything. I also disabled the NIC via the BIOS, and re-installed the Thinkpad NIC software.
I tried the Intel Software too and windows doesnt have a driver still for the device.
I'm glad its not a hardware problem, Linux can use it without a problem. Might have to wait to get back to school so they can re-image my thinkpad

wow - what a PITA. I'm sorry you are going thru this.
Do you have a LAN connection working on this notebook? If so, would you want to connect via instant messaging? I could give you my IM credentials for MSN Messenger and take over remotely. Not saying I can work magic but I have just not been stumped on something like this before, and would be happy to help you out.
In any event, best of luck and keep at it!

hehe thanks...I think I'm gonna wait 2 weeks until I move back to school. They give out these Thinkpads to every student, and hopefully they can re-image it and fix the problem. I can plug in and connect to the net...but I'll just use my Ubuntu until then if I need wireless.

Have you tried running the Software Installer or System Update? They might be able to pull the drivers for you.
Also, this was the one you downloaded, right?

I am having a similar problem with my Thinkpad A/B/G installing after a fresh install of XP Home OEM. I can get my ethernet to install the driver, but windows will not install the wireless driver. It goes through the found new hardware wizard, but will not find a driver even though I've installed the proper driver from lenovo.com and ran the setup. I've tried numerous reboots/reinstalls of the drivers, but no go. The card worked fine with Vista.
