I'm trying to add a new (larger) hard drive to an X60T running windows Vista Business.
I cloned the old HD with Acronis True Image 10, but when I install the new drive, I get the following error message:
"windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
To fix the problem:
1. Insert Windows installation disk and restart the computer
2.choose language setting. click next
3. click "repair your computer"
file \windows\system32\winload.exe
status 0xc000000e
The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt."
I don’t have a windows installation disk handy (I am on vacation).
Is there a simple work-around, or something simple I have forgotten to do?
All help is appreciated. Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere on the Forum, but I am on a dial-up connection, and can’t spend a long time searching.

Added new drive in Vista, "Windows failed to start"

If Kyocera's suggestion doesn't work out could you post some details of how you made the disk clone?
--How was Vista installed on the source drive? Did it come with Vista preinstalled or did you install? If you installed, did Vista create the partitions or did you install to already-existing partitions?
--Where were the old and new disks located when you did the clone? Which was internal and which was in the Ultrabay or connected via USB or how were they connected?
--Did you use the "clone" function in ATI or did you create an image?
--If an image, was it of the whole disk including all partitions or just some of the partitions?
There are some subtle issues that can trip you up when cloning or imaging Vista, especially with the ThinkPad BIOS and the way it reports hard disk geometry. There are some very interesting posts about this topic on the TrueImage forum:
Issues with changing disk geometry
Issues with the Vista DiskID

This is the standard problem with cloning Vista drives. If you don't have a Vista install CD handy to do the repair, you need to boot with the original drive again. Now, before cloning, open a command prompt and enter the following commands exactly as is:
BCDEDIT /set {bootmgr} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} osdevice boot
Now do the cloning, swap the disks and you should be off to the races.
The BCDEDIT commands are necessary to enable the cloned disk to be bootable automatically.
