One of the problems may be the DVD player... if you've got something not many people are familiar with, few can help. Might be worthwhile checking the player programmer's website to see whether any information is available there.Nobody has anything for me? i am curious about this...
But a more basic one is presumably the Windows 98... the number of people using it is dropping, the driver support is withering and in particular, expertise with it in connection with modern or fairly modern applications (such as DVD players) is uncommon.
I'm conservative and also stayed with Win98 for a very long time, but I think in this kind of a situation - problems with modern software, driver installations and the like - you'd be better off moving to a more modern OS. The T20 would run Windows 2000 and with enough RAM even Windows XP, and both would give you fewer problems.
If such a switch is not a viable option for you, my advice would be to check the Internet for Win98-specific forums, where you might get more information than here, since the problems you describe don't appear to be Thinkpad-specific.
Sorry not to be able to provide anything more, but I hope the above gives you some food for thought.

Thanks for the information, The problem isnt the software.. Maximus Dvd player is designed for windows 98, i am also using the classic media player and it plays sound but only with Wave out, the error comes into play with DxDiag. i belive i had this same error with my thinkpad 600X
but i sold it and never used anything that aquired the direct sound. the problem sources from the sound card.
