T42p ... awwwwwwwwww yeah!!!

#1 Post by kjarrett » Wed Oct 27, 2004 8:08 pm

It's here, it's flawless, I'm in heaven!

No dead pixels, great performance, awesome software!

Will be spending some time getting it set up but it's great just running IE! Saw my wifi LAN on the first pass, authenticated, and we're in!

GREAT deal and GREAT service from Bill Morrow. If you're buying a Thinkpad anywhere else, you're making a mistake!

More later, gotta run!

Totally! FireFox my browser of choice. I haven't had time to install anything yet! Hopefully by this weekend.

I agree

I just wish Firefox would adopt the mozilla menu when tabbed browsing so the "close tab" when you right click was at the top...........not the bottom. It is quicker in Mozilla..........

thats just my 2 cents worth

Firefox is nearing 1.0 status too. It should be out in a few weeks. There's no better time to switch!

fargusmax, I just checked the version I've been using for a while, and it says:

Version 1.0 Preview Release.

Will the release of 1.0 be much different than what I'm using? Or is this it?

There will be some additional bug fixes. There definitely shouldn't be any added features. I believe the order of releases is like this:

1.0PR - 1.0RC1 - 1.0RC2 - 1.0 Final

So 1.0PR = 1.0 Beta

Can you tell they want to make it as stable as possible?

The latest release is 1.0RC1, and it can be found here:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/f ... es/1.0rc1/

The official nightly builds can be found here:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/f ... test-0.11/

For starters, tabs.

And here are some more reasons I dug up quickly:

Two Words: Tabbed Browsing

Mozilla, Firefox, Opera. They all do it, and Firefox is lighter than Mozilla and free where Opera is ad supported. That's my main reason. There is a bit of a learning curve because we've been so used to IE for so long, but if you take the time to learn how to effective use tabs, you'll never go back. IE doesn't do tabs.

Pop-up blocking: I know IE added pop-up blocking in SP2, but I think the built-in pop-up blocking in Firefox is more effective. Add in the extension AdBlock, and I almost never see ads I don't want to.

Which brings me to my next point. Extra functionality via extensions is fantastic. I like to automatically refresh my sports sites - and there's an extension called "reload every" which allows you to automatically refresh from every second to every 5 minutes. There are a ton of extensions that ad functionality or make things easier. IE just isn't that dynamic.

A lot of people like the themes...I'm not really that big on them. IE has no theme support. IE's UI isn't bad at all, but if you feel like a change...no can do.

Don't get me wrong, IE does just fine for basic stuff. I have to use it for Windows Update and other sites that Firefox doesn't render correctly (cough....thinkpads.com) - But I would go insane trying to use IE for my everyday internet browsing.

Rob

edit: Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't regularly used IE in a long time, and with the exception of the pop-up blocking in SP2, I don't know Microsoft has done to make IE better. So, if I am incorrect in anything I mentioned, then don't hesitate to let me know.

Hmm....I just built this version tonight. I compile with all the tags that optimize it for a P4 w/SSE2. Wonder if that's it? It's towards the bottom after all the current models are listed. It's like one part of the site is sitting on top of the other. I don't know how to post pics here, or I'd take a screenshot of what I'm talkin about.

To post pics place them on your webserver and then add in the [img]and[/img] tags to wherever you stuck it. I would assume everyone runs their own web and email server and has their own domain, right? This is the year 2004, like 10 years after the rise of the internet being something most Americans knew about, even if they had never been on it.

Ha, no domain/webserver for me. But since you aren't experiencing something similar, it must be my build. Since I've noticed the weirdness for the last couple of weeks, its probably one of those darn optimization switches...Bah, thats why the official builds aren't optimized.

Yep, that's it alright. Good, I didn't wanna lose any performance that compiler optimization provides. It may only be subjective, as I have no empirical data to support it, but the optimized builds do feel faster, both in render and in load.

But when you say GREAT, do you really mean GREAT?
