T40P Questions / Issues
Hey guys, i recently was given a decommissioned IBM T40P laptop, the laptop is currently missing the battery and hard drive, however i was given a genuine IBM 19V 2.4A powerpack.
When i plug in the laptop and attempt to turn it on nothing apart from the fans start.
Do you need a battery in the laptop for it to boot? Or is my problem powerpack related?
Thanks in advance

You need an AC adapter that supplies 16V and 4.5A. Look for part numbers 02K6756 or 02K6749.

Welcome to the forum!
If I had a spare 72W (16 x 4.5) adapter, I'd gladly sell it to you, but my spare is my spare, if you know what I mean, and I use it whenever I'm out of the house.
Looking on eBay Australia the prices range from about $26 shipped for a non-IBM adapter up to about $35 for a genuine IBM adapter. I have one of each; the non-IBM one works fine for me. Check out eBay and find out for yourself would be my advice, or see whether the person who gave you the T6x adapter has a T4x one they can swap for.

Thanks for the reply guys, i ordered a T40 powerpack first thing this morning.
Just out of curiosity, does a T40P actually say T40P on the laptop or just T40? I lifted the keyboard of another T40 and it had no heatsink on the ATI 7500 gpu but when i took my keyboard off it has a copper heatpipe and heatsink on the gpu.
My laptop is a type 2373-72M, Is this a T40 or a T40P?

That model is a T40. A T40p would say T40p on the LCD faceplate. If you have a long fan, someone changed it. What is your motherboard part number (visible by removing the rear memory cover and the chip there if there is one) Since your model was supposed to come with an Ati 7500 and a short fan, something was changed. The long fans only originally came on other graphics chips. Also, is the model on the BIOS screen the same as the one on the sticker?
That's for sure - with some of the available Pentium M CPUs on eBay, the long fan will be one less thing you need when/if you decide to upgrade the CPU.richk wrote:Having the long fan certainly won't hurt.

If the AC Adapter is a genuine IBM part you could offer it for sale or trade in the marketplace for a T4x AC Adapter.
Just a thought.

The T4x ThinkPads are rated for a 16V regulated input voltage, so you may well have fried your planar (motherboard) just by plugging the 19V supply into your T40.

Re: T40P Questions / Issues
I tried it only in one T40, still doesn't explain why the other one doesn't work.
Guess they are both going to the bin if i cant get it working

You could offer them for sale as parts / repair machines in the marketplace here. I am sure someone would be interested in them.

I might be - will keep an eye on the thread. Unless you mean you'd throw adapters into the bin.Temetka wrote:You could offer them for sale as parts / repair machines in the marketplace here. I am sure someone would be interested in them.
If you have issues though and want to get rid of them, send me a PM, because I might be looking at getting hold of a 14.1" T4x for my parents soon and could find some spare parts handy.

It sounds like the system was stripped.
Remove the Keyboard and underneath you will see the CPU HSF. Remove the HSF.
