universal power adapter

#1 Post by yawnmoth » Mon Aug 20, 2007 1:51 pm

Apple has a world travel adapter kit and I'm sorta wondering if maybe there's anything like it for ThinkPads?

I ask because I was hoping to get a power adapter that could work in Europe, the United States, and on a plane. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which one would qualify.

I'm using an R50e.

Here are the ones Lenovo are currently selling:

None of them look like they'd do what I'm wanting them to do, though (eg. none look to have multiple "prongs")

A couple of months ago when I unpacked a Macbook, I couldn't figure out what that silly-looking plug/cord was for. It was obvious that it was supposed to go to some sort of power adapter but it took me several days to realize that you could pull off the retractable prongs from the square AC/DC adapter and attach the cord  .

As far as I know, because of the design of the IBM AC adapters, you could buy specific cords which will plug into the power supply. Or, you could go to Radio Shack or Fry's and buy a similar plug set like at the Apple link.

Also, if you want to use the adapter on a plane or a car, then you would need the AC/DC Combo adapter like the 22P9003.

P.S. Can you please update your profile with your location? City/State will be fine. Thanks.

Hmmm. Any idea as to where I might find the cables?

Also, my location has been updated. Any particular reason it's required? Some sort of anti-spam strategy?

I would have assumed that you could get them from the IBM or Lenovo web sites, but according to the T4x HMM (for example), it says that "power cords for a specific country or region is usually available only in that country or region". I tried plugging in 76H3518 (European cord) into shop.lenovo.com but couldn't find any way to buy one.

Your best bet would probably be to find a set of plug adapters. That way you can simply use the 2-prong AC cord and attach a conversion plug which will fit the country of choice. If you are using a genuine IBM AC adapter it should be able to handle 100-220VAC input, but check just to make sure.

Thanks for updating your profile. The request to have your location specified in your profile is outlined in this FAQ:

Since you're in Austin, you could go to Fry's at 12707 N Mopac Expy and see if they have such an adapter kit. I think the two Fry's near me have them (look around the electronic parts section, possibly near the tools and power cards/surge suppressors).
