600E....weird display problem

#1 Post by Wingnut » Tue Aug 21, 2007 1:06 am

The screen started acting funny on my dads computer. Its like the screen looks when its in safe mode....but much worse. Very distorted. Then the mouse leaves a big white trail behind it as it moves. Has anyone ever experienced that before? I booted it to the config screen and ran a test on the display and got the following error for the display:

DEV 050
ERR 16
FRU 0010

According to the HMM, The DEV 050 is for the display and the FRU 0010 is for the system board. But I can't find anything for the ERR 16 code???

I THINK its a system board problem as opposed to a display problem based on the above info??? The computer seems to be working fine for now (I am typing this from his laptop). But I would still like to get to the bottom of the problem. I tried opening up the base & reseating some connections with no luck. I just thought someone might have had this problem before.

Thanks for looking.

Since the built-in diagnostics have returned some sort of error, then I would assume that the problem is related to the video memory or video controller. I don't know what "ERR 16" means either; IBM seems to have documented the FRU and DEV numbers but left out the last nail (an ERR table).

Unfortunately, if you have such an error (video memory or controller) there's not much you can do besides replacing the motherboard.
