T60 Infrared printer set-up

#1 Post by fiyi » Tue Aug 21, 2007 7:32 pm

Hi,
I have a T60 with Windows XP. I was given an old HP Deskjet 350 with an infrared adapter. The CD that came with it does not have a driver for Windows XP, but this is not a problem as the driver is already loaded into XP. Here is what I did-

The printer is set up. I can see a green light on the IR adapter of the printer (manual says this indicates it is all set up and ready) . Since it has not been used for a long time I have no idea if the printer is working. Since i do not have a parallel port, I can not check this (at least for now)

On my laptop, the IRport has been enabled. I checked it in BIOS as well as using Thinkpad Configuration. On System Devices, it says enabled and the port is working.

The manual says, the IR (of my laptop) should automatically detect any IR devices in its range and install it. One need not use Add Printer wizard to add the printer. But I don't see it happening. the two IR ports are literally touching each other :) so there are no obstructions.

I tried adding the printer manually using Add Printer, but I do not know which PORT i should configure the printer to. How can I figure this out? Any help is appreciated.

thanks a lot.

granted that sounds good and all but IR printing via laptops? ouch? Wouldn't that require getting up each time to go print? Might as well get a print server an that way you can sit in the couch and print wirelessly without having to line up anything.

As for installing the printer they should automatically connect but don't put them so close. There should be some space between em as i don't think directly will work.

As for why else it might not be working i have no clue

Verify that the Infrared port is enabled in Device Manager, then see link below for setup instructions.

many thanks for the posts.
SHoTTa35: this was a freebie :) I was not really looking to have my own set up at home. Thought it might come handy sometime.
And yes, I had them lined up within 1-2 feet between them and tried different distances.

GomJabbar, thank you for the link. I had come across this too and tried it. So my Device Manager says the port (IBM Thinkpad Fast Infrared Port) is enabled. It had been enabled by default. I anyway re-booted (according to the manual) when it is supposed to prompt for the installation of the IR software. I don't see any such thing. Could it be that Lenovo over rides the default behavior of XP? ThinkPad Configuration does not show up anything other than whether the device is enabled. Here is what it says about it in System Summary-

Device class: Infrared
Device description: IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port
Driver provider: National Semiconductor
Driver date: 3-17-2001
Driver version: 1.0.0.0
Device status: Enabled
Resource
I/O address: [02F8 - 02FF]
DMA: 3
IRQ: 3

thanks!
Fi
