I don't get it. So is something missing there?? T61 already came with a DVD writer. I am not sure if it is ultrabay or something. If it is missing can I get one from lenovo or do I return the notebook?

Well, you said "back" and that threw me, since this on the bottom instead. That's the screwwell for the UltraBay device retention screw. When you got your ThinkPad, at least two little zip-loc bags should have been included, one containing two screws. The shorter one fits this hole.

I wondered about what it was for when I found it, but I just had a look round the laptop and found the hole. Once screwed in, it prevents the UltraBay device (like the burner) from being removed easily. This helps as a theft deterrent, since even when a Kensington lock is used, the drive can be pulled. Also, if you wish to use a second hard drive as a permanent feature, this helps secure it.

I'm guessing that other screw is for when you lose one replacing RAM, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Nothing is missing, it's the way it's supposed to be. I recieved my T61 yesterday and it too is the same exact way. :)

Thanks for the reply guys. Yeah now I remember the screw pack. Probably I will tighten the drive as I won't be removing it

I forgot to mention...you'll need a stardriver or torx wrench to screw it in. That's another theft deterrent aspect of it.

Well, it's a bit hollow without the fingerprint reader if you skipped that.
