Create Recovery Disk problem
Create Recovery Disk problem
Hi folks!
Can anybody tell me what is wrong with my T43? I try to run Create and Recovery Media from Access IBM applications suite. After confirming the media (I choose CD) I end up with the error message: "Resources required by this application are already in use. Please retry after the other application completes."
Sincerely
Eugene

He-he,
Unfortunately that's not it. I was able to create a Rescue and Recovery CD. When I booted from it I chose System Recovery and opted to restore the hard drive to factory preset state. After reboot it asked me for Product Recovery Disk 1. How come? How can I make it? As far as I understand I will need 6 more CDs. Can I compile all of them into one DVD?
I have a combo drive that can only read DVDs. Is there any way to download them?

Hmmm....a combo drive should be able to read DVDs and CDs.
If you go into the start menu and into Access IBM, there should be a Rescue and Recovery section that gives an option to "Create Recovery Discs." You can either make a set entirely of CDs, or make a set with 1 CD and 1 DVD (for some reason, the first disc has to be a CD...)

X61 - 3GB, 80GB SSD
To create a set of Product Recovery Discs, do one of the following:
The old way was to go to: Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Create Recovery Discs.
The new way is to go to: Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media, then click on radio button: "Create a set of Product Recovery discs now", and finally click on OK. You can also create the Rescue Media from this screen.
You can only burn one set of Product Recovery Discs until you Restore Factory Contents - then you are given the option again.
This software is not available for download. If you need a set, you can purchase them from Lenovo for about $45.

Hi guys,
Many-many thanks for your input. I think I have a limited way to create rescue media.
If I choose "Create rescue media" this is what I have:
Select the type of media you want to use, then click OK:
- CD;
- USB hard disk drive;
Note: All data currently on the selected media will be overwritten. DVD-RAM is not supported.
So, if I choose CD option the Rescue and Recovery CD is created and burned and then I don't have any chance to proceed with burning DVD. Is this because DVD-RAM is not supported ?
If I choose "Create Product Recovery disks" again I have the same note: DVD-RAM is not supported for disk 1 of the Product Recovery Set.
Anyway, I proceed and choose "create a set of Product Recovery disks now". Then I am presented with the only choice:
Select Recordable Drive: "MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-822S 1.61"
I confirm it and burn 1 CD. No requests for DVDs again.
Can I overcome this limitation by using USB hard drive to create all the necessary images and burn them later on DVD on the other workstation?
Sincerely Eugene

Create rescue media only makes the first cd of the recovery set. Create recovery discs creates the whole set. Use a cd for the first disc and then either cd's or dvd's (+rom or -rom, not ram) for the remainder.
If this fails contact IBM and if you are still within warranty they will probably send you a set free since you cannot make your own.

Ok, guys.
I've managed to download T43 recovery DVD and was pleased when it was read the process of recovery to factory presets seemed to be working. But finally, I've got an error saying that the process couldn't be finished. The file ZRRE033A.IMZ was referenced as a source of a problem. Any idea what could it be?
I've checked the integrity of this image file. Seems to be not damaged. At least I was able to look what's inside of it. But I was not able to unzip it as it asked me for the password.

I received the "Resources required by this application are already in use" error on my new x61s after the Create Recovery Media application BSOD'd the first time I tried to run it. I'm doing a factory restore now from R&R to see if I can start fresh, as there appears to be no DLA option for me to adjust.

Thanks, carbon_unit. I was able to make the recovery discs immediately after doing a factory restore. I was pretty aggravated as Lenovo could have saved me a lot of time. As soon as I got the recovery discs and registered my fingerprints for system boot authentication, I was able to wipe the drive and start installing Linux.

I have just received a factory recovered hard drive for my T42. I'd like to create recovery media before I start screwing around with the system, but there doesn't appear to be any option to create recovery media in the Pre-desktop area or the Windows XP Access IBM.
Do I need to install an additional application to enable the 'Create Recovery Media' option?
My machine is a 2373-4TG

The actual application is: C:\IBMTOOLS\utils\spi\reccd.exe
I do not believe installing Rescue and Recovery will help. See if you have the IBM_Service Partition or not. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management. Without the service partition, I don't think you can create the Product Recovery Discs.

Yes, I have the IBM Service partition. I do not have the C:\IBMTOOLS\utils\spi\ directory though, and 'reccd.exe' does not exist on my hard drive. Can I download this app from Lenovo?
I installed R&R and was now able to create a Startup CDROM, so I replaced the hard drive with my new blank 120GB one (instead of the replacement tiny 30GB Lenovo sent me).
I then booted from the Startup and Recovery CDROM and got into the 'Access IBM' DOS application, but when I tried to 'Recover Factory State' onto the new drive, it gave an error about this option being unavailable (probably because the new drive has no partitions).
My T60 created both the Startup CD and a DVD recovery media, which could then install the IBM OS from bare metal, maybe sure if there is something missing from this T43 machine?

Nowhere to download reccd.exe. Note that reccd.exe is only 140 Kb, so more than just that file is needed.
You can try using the Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette on the drive with the Service Partition, then see if you can boot into Rescue and Recovery. If so, try Restoring Factory Contents (warning, this will erase all existing partitions and data on your hard drive and reinstall Windows and the original Factory Software). You could also try this by booting up from the Recovery Media CD you created. This would have to be on the hard drive that has the Service Partition already.
Unfortunately, there is a chance that by installing Rescue and Recovery, you may have lost any opportunity to create the Product Recovery Discs. I believe this is generally the case when you upgrade Rescue and Recovery.

Your best bet might be to get some cloning software and clone your existing drive. The Ultrabay Slim 2nd hard drive adapter comes with cloning software on a floppy.
