Dell D830 - I like it !!!

#1 Post by wearetheborg » Thu Aug 23, 2007 6:28 am

I had a chance to see a dell d830 recently. I was impressed.
A 15.4" WSXGA+, it weighed in at about 6 lbs. Very well built. It uses a mag alloy casing. Super solid, no flex anywhere. The lid was rigid, no ripples etc on the screen on putting pressure. Metal hinges, metal lid hooks.
I also liked the screen, see my Aug 19th post in this thread:

The negatives: Keyboard was not all that good. Surprising since I've like other dell keyboards.
Some space between the lid and the bottom case when closed, which allowed lid to travel when pressed.
Thicker than a T42.

The 820 and 830 are not bad machines. They are well built, but the design feels a bit less refined than a ThinkPad. The plastic pieces don't fit together as nicely, and the trackpoint needs a scroll button.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

I thought the pieces very fit well together.
But yeah, I sorely missed the trackpoint middle button (I use it heavily as a middle mouse button).
