7k60 as external drive ? Possible ?

#1 Post by dd » Thu Oct 28, 2004 4:14 pm

Hi
Just for interest:
I have tried a Hitachi 60 gig 7k60 7200 spin as an external drive to backup my data. Unfortunately the system just locks and does not copy the files?
Do I need to have a powered USB2 enclosure?
I have tried plugging both USB2 connectors in to see if it gives more power, but it doesnt seem to make any difference?

Do I need special drivers? I thought XP was plug and play?

I've used that drive in a standard 2.5" USB 2.0 enclosure, powered only be the USB port on my X31

I've been using a 7K60 in an external USB2.0 non-powered enclosure for quite a long time on several models of Thinkpads with no problems. I almost always use both of the connectors provided on the laptop end of the cable to ensure it gets all the power it requires.

The enclosure is one of those inexpensive black ones found on eBay for approx. $10 that say "IBM Travelstar Inside" on the top.

OK

I will give it another go .....But have 1 more question, (As always)

Does the USB drive in its enclosure need to be set to slave/master or are no jumpers required?

Many Thanks

No jumpers installed, i.e. Master.

James

If you previously had it installed in the ThinkPad and set a disk password, you'll need to re-install it and remove the password before it will work in the USB enclosure.

ive got one of those, is there supposed to be support for the drive inside the casing at the end?

it seems to just be supported by the pins alone and the other end seems to just "hang" and let gravity do its magic.

Skanky,

They just lie in there, no aft end support. I put some 3M foam tape on the top and bottom of the 7K60 in mine to stop it from slapping around.

Just an update!

I nuked the disk with from Ultimate Boot CD!
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

I used Autoclave . . .

Anyway. Since then, the disk in its USB enclosure has seemed to be just fine.

BTW: JHEM: The Caddy hasnt arrived yet . . . .
