Wireless Driver Problems

#1 Post by chadwicktr » Fri Aug 24, 2007 1:28 am

I just did a fresh install on my new T61 of XP home oem sp2. Everything is updated via windows update, and all of the updates I want from System update.

however, I tried to get my Thinkpad A/G/B installed first, but it will not install. It goes through the "found new hardware" routine (it comes up as a ethernet controller?, the intel ethernet is working), but says it cannot install a driver for the device.

What is going on...

When I choose what file to use (have disk) and select the file from C:\windows\system32\NET5416.INF it just says this device cannot start.

Ugh

Where did you get the card from and is it really an a/b/g or is it an /a/b/g/n? If it's an a/b/g/n this is the correct driver -

That is the driver I've tried. It's a A/B/G Card... this is very frustrating, I've never had a problem like this.

It almost appears that Windows is having trouble installing it's own drivers. The Wireless card won't install, the modem won't install, and a PCI device won't install (I can't remember what the PCI is right off the top of my head... I stayed up until 3am messing with it).

Please post any other ideas. I'm at a loss...

Ok, so where did you get it from? T61's shipped with a few Intel cards and only one Atheros card and it is a/b/g/n. Check your invoice.

It was through EPP phone order.

Here is the pcwizard info:
Network Card : Atheros Communications Inc 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter
Here is my info from the order confirmation:
41W1685 SBB 11ABGWIFI WL LAN USEULAANZ
It's a summary of what I've done:

I did a fresh install of XP Home SP2

I tried to install the Thinkpad A/B/G wireless card with the driver GoJammer linked, the extract went fine. The setup.exe ran fine which copies the inf's over to system32 folder ran fine. But when windows tried to run through "found new hardware wizard" it will not find a proper driver and won't install.

I then installed the intel ethernet driver just fine. Next I downloaded the chipset driver that installed.

Then, I went through windows update and system update with that installing power manager, APS, graphics driver, hotkey utility, bluetooth, wireless usb, HPA bus for sound, and the sound max driver. All of these work.

However, I've tried installing the wireless at several different points during all of this to no avail. There is a poster in the T6x forum with the same problem.

Once this is done, a pop-up window will appear.

9. Open an Explorer and locate the directory where the files were
extracted.
10. Double-click SETUP file.
11. Follow the instructions on the screen.
12. Restart the computer.

Finally delete the file saved in the step 2.
This is exactly what I've done. But it cannot find the driver.

I just did another clean install with XP Home OEM SP1, and it is doing the same thing. For some reason, this driver is not working with XP at all.

That driver isn't for the Atheros Communications Inc 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter if you read the description:

- ThinkPad 11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter
- ThinkPad 11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter

What you need is this driver

Wireless LAN adapter software (ThinkPad 802.11bg, 802.11abg) for Windows XP and 2000 - ThinkPad

Drove me crazy because I went to the link that GomJabbar indicated from another page that said it was for the abg card, and after trying to install it multiple times, realized that it was for an abgn card, and through research realized that the abg card is used in the z60 where they lists both abg and abgn drivers separately.

For cross reference you can go to Access Connections and see they list the cards independently too.

THANKS!! I tried looking at different machine types for a strictly ABG driver but I didn't check the Z series.

Although the description online only mentions ABGN, when you install the program the first install screen says for ABGN, ABG, AB thinkpad cards

Can this be made a sticky? This has taken several hours of my time up searching for and answer. Thank you so much guys! I love this forum

I blame it on Lenovo. They are installing Atheros a/b/g wifi cards in T61 models but not documenting it well or at all. I know that some of the mods here can open up incident reports with Lenovo, this would be a good candidate. Nowhere in the parts/system reference guide for a model T61 does it mention Thinkpad a/b/g cards as an option. (it only mentions Thinkpad a/b/g/n)

I've just wasted 6 hours of frustation because they don't link that driver with my machine type and the driver they do list claims in the installer it's for a ABG AB and ABGN card...

Thanks so much guys!

I am sorry it took you so many hours to find the solution, but IMO this one incident does not rate a Sticky. We cannot Sticky the solution to every problem that ThinkPad owners experience. Now that your problem and solution have been documented, other forum members or moderators can more quickly help users that encounter the same problem - at least until Lenovo resolves the issue.

I will pass along what was discovered here to someone that should be able to get this resolved on Lenovo's end.

@danny_isr
You probably downloaded the driver file from Lenovo, then ran the file. All this does is extract the file's contents to your hard drive. You then need to go to the directory the files were extracted to and (generally) run Setup.exe. These files will be extracted to a subfolder of C:\Drivers\. If you want to find out what is in any of these subfolders, double-click on the .XML file in that folder, then read through what you see, to see which driver/software that folder applies to, and the version level of that driver/software.

If you read through the installation instructions for each of these downloads, you will find the exact procedure to use.

EDIT: After downloading and extracting the driver file to your hard drive, you can run Software Installer (uncheck box to: "Retrieve latest information on the internet") and let it install the driver. Or you can just run Software Installer and let it find the driver on the internet, download and install it.

i'm not sure why the "system update" didn't fix all those ??

Could be Bluetooth, could be the modem - I don't know. Did you install the Intel Chipset drivers?
