Recommendations for USB KVM switch with FULL mouse support?

#1 Post by SteveS » Fri Aug 24, 2007 11:23 am

I am trying to use two T43p ThinkPads with one USB mouse, USB keyboard and DVI display. My luck with KVM switches has been poor – they don’t support the full functionality of the Logitech mouse. I have read that KVM swathes usually only emulate a basic generic two button wheel mouse, however some do everything by emulating switching cables – performing a USB attach function to force the PC to enumerate the bus and find the real mouse.

This sounds like it could work, but has anyone in the forum had experience with this type of switch? I know if I wake the T43p up from sleep mode with the mouse not attached and then attach it, it reverts to only generic functionality. So I am concerned this type of switch would do the same thing.

If you have one that works, please list the vendor

Look at the Belkin SOHO series. They tend to be a little on the expensive side, but they are supposedly better KVMs compared to the rest.

That said, I wish IBM made a KVM.

I've been very pleased with the KVM switch I got from Rose Electronics
4 or 5 years ago. The one I have may not support all the stuff you want,
as I use only a standard 2-button mouse, but I'd bet they make one to
fit your needs and wants.

The reason I recommend them to you is that I compared a lot of them before
I bought, and their prices were most reasonable and I've been satisfied
with my purchase.

Bob

PS - The fact that I won a very nice laptop carry bag from them in an
email contest they once ran had no effect on this recommendation.
