I've replaced the system board in my T40. Now I won't power up, and the only way I can get any of the system lights to even come briefly is to remove the battery and power cord and press and hold the power button. Then put the battery back in and plug in the power cord. Both boards have a security chip, and I may have removed the chip briefly while putting the new board back in. Subsequently in the IBM doc I noticed this could be really bad.
I saw a post from another member about replacing the system board and didn't use a chip at all in the replacement board, but not sure if that was because the new board didn't have a spot for the chip.
Could the security chip be my problem?
Could it be something else?
Do I have to use a security chip?
Thanks for any advise.
T40 Security Chip
hmm.. weird. Did you replace it with a T40 board or a T41 and higher board? Maybe all the connections aren't fully connected, stuff like memory and all that. Make sure they are tucked in tightly.

It was a system board with the same IBM P/N. I'll put it back together and make sure the connections are good. I did have one thing happen when I first took it apart - I inadventently pulled the wires out the plug to the modem, instead of the plug from the modem. Didn't know which way they went so I guessed. I don't use the modem anyway. Would this matter?
