New BIOS update

#1 Post by lvlolvlo » Thu Oct 28, 2004 6:06 pm

um,.....yeah I don't like the new slapsh screen with the IBM shifted down & to the left and the big ol centrino logo on the top right. makes it look like every other notebook's bios out there.

I believe they adopted this with the T41. My T40 BIOS splash screen looks much better.

Yep, the latest BIOS update changed the splash screen with the centrino logo. I liked the old one.

Arh, I also just updated to the 3.12 bios. [censored], the new splash screen looks ugly! I have even considered to roll back the bios and then take out the WIFI mini-pci and do the update again. In that way the one part is missing in the Centrino trinity - thus no reason to call it Centrino. Just wondering if that will help me. Any one tried that?

Well, you just see it for a couple of seconds so I do not know if its worth the hassle. Close your eyes while booting :-)

Interesting. I ripped out the Intel 2100 card in favour of the IBM 11 a/b/g card, and I didn't really notice any changes to the splash screen. Of course, my T41 is a Pentium M now. At least it works great! ... JDHurst

I agree it will be STOOPID to have "Centrino" pop up on the BIOS screen if our Thinkpads don't HAVE Centrino ... I would think IBM wouldn't be so cavalier. We'll see, I'll be flashing to the latest rev this weekend.

I don't think they're allowed to show it unless the system actually has the intel wireless card in it.

It won't say Centrino, but it will say Pentium M.. That's what mine is doing. But common guys! Does having an Intel logo on your BIOS make your ThinkPad any worse? It's still the same rugged, business black, "ready to kick any other laptop's butt" beast it's always been. lol...

it makes it a centrino, which means you've just brought into a marketing buzzword ;)

What was the last BIOS that works fine with T41 and T42 without the BIG FAT Centrino logo, but only my favourate IBM logo?

I have a 2379-EZU, which ships bare (so isn't "centrino")... when I got it it was an older revision, maybe 3.09? I know I've done at least two updates to it since I got it and am now on 3.12 like you guys. Mine has always had an Intel Pentium-M logo on it, even with the older revisions.

I think there may be utilities out there that let you edit the logo stored in the bios file, so you could theoretically dump the Centrino, or even replace the entire thing so you can do company branding or whatnot. I'll see what I can dig up...

Theres a discussion about Bios logos here on thinkpads.com, and it's also very easy to find.

And it works without any problems, so not upgrading a BIOS just because the logo sucks is maybe a bad idea.

i've got a 2373-RG9 and never had a PM logo, just a centered "IBM Thinkpad" logo dead center..

Or, you could just do what I do and never turn your TP off. Just hibernate/sleep instead of shutting down ;P

Maybe someone who hasn't got the Centrino / Pentium M logo could extract the bootlogo and post it here?

I just fiddled around a bit and managed to extract the logo from a T21 bios-image. So far for the good news. The bad news: I also extracted the logo from my current T42p bios and there's no centrino-logo to be found there either. It seems that the centrino / pm logo is kept seperate from the IBM / user-defined logo. So no matter what logo you put in, the centrino / pm logo will always sit there in the corner.

For those interested:
- The BIOS was extracted using UniFlash
- The logos were extracted from the BIOS-Image using PhnxDeco and ABR-G2

What I found interesing, too:
In the README.txt on the IBM BIOS-Update diskette they say that a user-defined logo should use not more than 16 colors. The IBM-Logo I extracted seems to use 256 colors.

If anyone finds out where the Intel-Logos reside, please post it here.

Happy hacking
