Basic T42 Video Question
Basic T42 Video Question
I have a T42 with a non-flexview 15'' XGA Screen and the video card is the ATI 7500 32MB.
1. Will an IPS screen work with the 32MB video card?
2. If a screen is XGA, that means that all it will reflect at the highest will be the XGA (1024 X 768) no matter what the video card is? eg. a 128 Video Card that ''supports'' SXGA+ will only show XGA resolution on a XGA display?

I'd rather have a 3 year old IBM than a new Dell (or HP)...
T60 2623-D7U, 14.1" SXGA+, 2.0Ghz, 1.50GB, 200GB, 160GB UB, DVDRW, a/b/g, WWAN, 128MB ATI X1400, BT, FP, 9-cell

I'll answer the second part first. LCDs are not like CRTs. 1024X768 means that there are that many clusters of LCDs. You cannot change the resolution and get something you would like..
As far as running different screens on the basic card, I used to think that it would work, but I have read from some people who tried that it didn't. I have a bad SXGA+ screen lying around that has a bad backlight. Whenever I get around to replacing the backlight and I'll post a definite answer. I now have a pile of 4 T30 screens and 4 T40 screens, so pretty soon it will be the day to do backlights.

Oh, it is? I didn't know it supported higher resolutions...2.) That is correct. Think about it for a moment, the ATI 7500 is capable of higher resolution than 1024x768...
So, if I get an IPS 15'' out of any T4x, it is essentially ''plug and play''?

No, first of all I believe that you need 64MB of onboard video RAM for the flexview panel. I'm sure someone here will correct me if I am giving erroneous advice. Secondly, you'll most likely need a new inverter and ribbon cable. It's all a moot point however unless you intend to replace the system board which houses the onboard GPU. So basically it is not a good upgrade for you. Cost wise you'd be better off buying a new/used machine with flexview and selling your old machine.CRSO wrote: So, if I get an IPS 15'' out of any T4x, it is essentially ''plug and play''?

So is this where the term ''native resolution'' comes into play?richk wrote:I'll answer the second part first. LCDs are not like CRTs. 1024X768 means that there are that many clusters of LCDs. You cannot change the resolution and get something you would like..
1. So the XGA 15'' screen I have will support only 1024 X 768 pixels max (native resolution?). That makes sense now.
2. I assume the video cards are also upgradeable? eg - If I do get an IPS, I can also get the 64MB card that came in some T42's?
As an example, I could have a top of the line NVidia GeForce that supports resolutions up in the 2xxx X 2xxx's but if my display only has 800 X 600 pixels in it, that's all i'm gonna see.... AhhhhHaaaa.

Thank you guys for your help...

Re: Basic T42 Video Question
With respect to the first question, this issue was recently discussed - have a look here and see my post of Wed Aug 01, 2007 there which will take you here where my post of Sun Jul 29, 2007 discuss this issue.CRSO wrote:I have a T42 with a non-flexview 15'' XGA Screen and the video card is the ATI 7500 32MB.

You may also use (the very useful!) "Search" function here, and more useful info will turn up...

I always use the search Johan, thanks.. I had a specific question concerning two issues in one. You knew where they were because you took part in them. Thank you guys for the answers though...Johan wrote:CRSO wrote: You may also use (the very useful!) "Search" function here, and more useful info will turn up...

Re: Basic T42 Video Question
1/ Yes, I already switch a 15" SXGA+ IPS screen from an A31p to an A30 with Mobility Radeon 16 MB.CRSO wrote:I have a T42 with a non-flexview 15'' XGA Screen and the video card is the ATI 7500 32MB.

2/ Resolution is fixed by the screen only. Any graphic card with 16 MB can drive a 1600x1200 screen (remember A21p).

I have tried, and the result is NO. it does not work with ISP, Only a few T4x motherboard support the ISP. I put the 15" ISP to the T40p, no display, to a T41/t40, no display. I have not try the T42 yet, but the T41p and T42p took it.
