WHERE CAN I GET A FAIR PRICE FOR A THINKPAD X31?

#1 Post by HarryWild » Thu Oct 28, 2004 9:27 pm

I decided to get a X31 for my notebook and be more up to date on things like USB 2.0 and such. I am welling to go for the bottom of the technology hierrachy because the PCI Express notebooks will becoming into the marketplace in the 1Q of 2005! IBM will probably 2nd Quarter?

I like to know were I purchase a used or new X31 with a IBM three year warranty on the unit. It does not have to be full three years just that it has at least 2 years or somewhere around that time left!

Rather stick with the X31 however, because of the 400MHZ and USB 2.0. :P

Heard bad things about refurbish; but never purchase one!

Thanks for your help!

Look about ten threads down from yours in the forum about an X20 Market....

P.S. it's rude to use ALL CAPS at any time unless you mean to yell at us all...just in case you did not know

fair price to whom?

if you are looking for a decent deal, consider a refurbished unit straight from ibm. You can find these on their website or through ibm authorized auctions on ebay. In addition you might want to look at Mastercard/Visa or other credit card discounts. There is also employee discounts... all of the discounts are usually between 5-15% of ibm list price. Best bet is ebay.

Or you can try Bill. Personally I have never tried Bill, but he does not have taxes and may people on this board have ordered a computer from him and have been extremely happy.

Another option is to wait for when they phase out their laptops that are in stock. This usually happens at the end of each quarter, the biggest sale just ended... Also if you are a student you might get good discounts there. Good Luck and let us know if u find a great deal!!! ;)

leesiulung,

I like the phasing out; because every quarter; the selection goes down on the X31s. I expecting them to be phased out completely in the beginning of 1 quarter 05'. I hope you are right because I would love to get it a firesale straight from the manufacturer. That would be equal to the one day "Dell" $750 off anything. Had a friend who purchase a 700m for $650! retailed for over $1,400 and it was loaded including a dual layer dvd burner! It is really a great looking screen and not bad overall. The optical drive is built-in too! It was a 1.2 Dothan 1m cache too; 512MB of memory! Custom online order and he just received it! I offer to buy it for $1,000 and he laughed!

Harry,

I'm pretty certain it's a 2672-BBU.

Concerning the X31; its a custom job; and it package and the 40gb is unknown 4200rpm I guessing and has only a "b" rated wireless and 256MB. I am now thinking about it and trying to find one that is totally package without going inside it after purchase like I did on my ThinkCentre and souping it up. And I looking at the super low end - Thinkpad 600X with an Pentium III, 100FSB and 100MHZ RAM. Am I crazy to buy such a machine; but it has a optical drive built-in it! Decisions, decisions! I guess on either purchase I will be souping it up!
The 600X will cost 1/3 of a new X31. But it is so old and numbers don't look to up to date for example, FSB 400MHZ vs 100MHZ, 16MB vs 4MB. Hard drives are same speed however! Also, I will have to get a PCMCIA card for a wireless "g" if I go with the 600X. The antenna sticks out 3/4 to 1". Kind of really dates the notebook. I am not sure if one can have it as a wireless mini pci card. I just throw some wires around and it the antenna. Does anyone know if it has a slot of r a mini pci card in the 600X?

The 600X has a miniPCI slot that holds its modem.

If you do decide to put in a MiniPCI WiFi card and internal antennae, do post on the 600 Upgrade thread and let us know just how well it works!

I bent the antenna on one of my WiFi cards already. Moving it to internal on the two 600X machines in my house would be a fun project.
