Upgrading T23 hard disk

#1 Post by Patrik28 » Sat Aug 25, 2007 1:38 pm

This original hard disk drive starts to be too small, so I have plans to put a bigger one. But how big hdd can Thinkpad T23 model support? I have windows xp installed. And is the limit same for a second hdd with ultrabay adapter?

I have heard that Seagate models are the best, but is there really differences between manufacturers?

if you have win xp with service pack 2 installed, size shouldn't be an issue, as long as you get a pata-disc.

mine is/was running with a 120gb disc, which worked both in an ultrabay adapter and the normal slot.

Its just some of the newer models...I think that the T43 was the first to have that problem...

There was no problem, when I changed the original Hitachi 40Gb disk to Seagate 40Gb. So T23 model is not locked.

Hello,

You can use every single P-ATA (a.k.a. IDE) hard disk drive available on the market if you plan to use Windows XP, with SP1a or better.

I suggest you go for a 7200 rpm one. It will boost your machine.

On mine, I have a 5400 rpm HDD, and there is a huge improvement in everyday use (performances, and noise - it's a 40 Go Samsung Spinpoint).

I even plan to buy another for my very forthcoming X20 ! :P

But is there really big difference (5400 vs 7200 rpm), because this machine is relatively old? Pentium 1133MHz processor and 512Mb ram + a weak graphic card. For example I played well GTA3 with 5400 rpm notebook disk installed to a desktop computer with same specs but more powerful graphic card (Radeon 9550).

And if I choose 5400 rpm disc, the price is about 65 euros (100Gb) vs 7200 rpm - 100 euros (100Gb). So is there really point to spend extra money?

Edit. OK, I have ordered one 7200 rpm disc. Lets hope that it will be faster... I took Seagate again, because this current 5400.2, 40Gb was much more silent, comparing to original Hitachi 40Gb.

What about other OS Linux, Win2k?

I'm not sure about Linux, but I am pretty sure that Win2K has the same problem as the first version of WinXP...137gb limit...

Win2K supports drives larger than 137 GB beginning with service pack 3. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article 305098 for the details including a required registry edit.

Another question...

#13 Post by Patrik28 » Tue Aug 28, 2007 10:00 am

I didn't get the hard disk yet, but I have another question (quess it won't need a new topic).
So, is it worth to get a new battery, when this old have turned to yellow (on IBM battery wizard). I have tried to use the battery to 0%, then recharge and again few times, without help. How long these Li-Ion batteries normally last and should I try with non-IBM battery -> cheaper and little powerful (but chinese and unknown cells)
