Rescue and Recovery

#1 Post by ray_burger » Sat Aug 25, 2007 7:51 pm

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post my problem, sorry if it is not.

My system is A30p and Windows XP Pro. Both MS and IBM are up to date. I also am using Symantec Internet Security 2007. My version of Rescue and Recovery is 4.10.0314.00. I also delete old incremental backups.

I was using the previous version R&R (4.10.0114.00 I think, it was the version before the simple interface was added). I was able to create a base backup, incremental backups, and delete incremental backups. Then I was not able to take a backup. I get the message, backup unsuccessful.

I re-ran the install with the repair option and this did not fix the problem. Next I checked on the IBM site and found the update to 4.10.0314.00. I ran the update and this did not fix the problem.
Next I downloaded the complete package for 4.10.0314.00. I did a simple (meaning I did not clean out the Registry) uninstall and installed the complete package. This did not fix the problem.

When running the backup it completes 100% of the backup just fine. In the finalization phase the unsuccessful message appears. There are no messages in the Microsoft Event and System log. In the RR.log there is a long list of error messages for error 5, not being able to set the archive bit, for Symantec files.

I am making and assumption that this may be the problem. However Lenovo is not the old IBM and wants me to pay to talk to them. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone have any ideas how to solve it?

Yes I am aware that the A30p is not listed as being supported for this version and the other versions leading up to it. However, that just means that they did not test with this hardware and there is nothing inherently in the hardware to stop it from working.

Thanks
Ray

I too am running on "unsupported" hardware (T30) and am using the latest release with no problems.

From your description it sounds like the error reported regarding the Archive Bit may well be the problem.
Have you tried the RnR backup with the Symantec software disabled/shutdown ? I have no expreience of their products so I don't know if that's possible.

Whenever I do any backups (RnR or any other product), I always ensure I have stopped as many other applications as I can, if only to try and ensure a consistent copy of the data.

Ashlyes

Yes, I have tried it with Symantec shut down. Setting an achieve bit has nothing to do with the running of Symantec.

Thanks

If I read you correctly, you were able to make a base backup and then make
incremental backups, but after removing the incremental backups you were
no longer able to make incremental backups.

Did you try removing the base backup, and then making a new one?

If that doesn't work, I'd remove the 4.x R&R and install a 3.x (the latest
one you can find) and see how it works.

If it works OK, I then try to upgrade to the latest 4.1.

Bob

I took part of your advice. I deleted all backups and created a new base. I used most current RnR that I had installed, I did not revert back to 3.1. The backup completed sucessfully. The log file still showed error code 5 for the Symantec files, but it looks like that is not a show stopper.

I am not sure why it worked. Perhaps the backups got out of sync and an incremental could not be taken. A proper error message would be helpful.

Thanks
Ray
