Question about warranty of "certified used" T42..

#1 Post by yellow_lenghan » Fri Oct 29, 2004 3:17 am

The details about the warranty of certified used thinkpads are given here on their website. http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... ct=2580948

Is the "1 year limited manufacturer's warranty" an international warranty or not? Being a canadian that will move to the states in about 6 months, it's important for me to have an international warranty.

Also, what is the general opinion about "certified used" thinkpads from ibm.com?
Are they as good as a new? Higher chances to get dead pixels? Less chance to have problems because production problems should have been eliminated by technicians whereas completely new laptop are I guess less tested?

Thank you in advance...

The Certified Used ("Refurbished") warranty is just a shorter version of IBM's regular warranty - 7-days no questions asked return policy (as opposed to 30 days for new) and a 1 year IBM warranty (as opposed to 3 years for new). Yes, I think you have a higher chance of getting a computer that someone returned for a dead pixel, as all of these computers are customer returns.

Lolz about the dead pixel thing. I would give the % of one dead/stuck pixel at 100% and of two at about 90%. I wouldn't expect it to be anything more than that though. The battery might have a few cycles or something like that. I generally dont find the savings of buying refurbished to be that great, and certainly not enough to give up the benefits of a nice return policy and the chance to get a mint notebook. But certainly if you really need the savings it is a good way to go.

WARNING!!

I called Ibm USA first, they told me that yes the warranty should apply internationally, as for new thinkpads.

I then called Ibm Canada and they said it should be international, except that to be absolutely sure, I should call Ibm Global Financing with the serial number of my machine. As you cannot know the serial before buying the notebook, that wasn't really helpful.

Afterward, I called Ibm USA again for another question and, just for the fun of it, asked about the warranty on refurbs. The guy didn't know the answer, so he put me in communication with a girl of the refurb department. She told me, with 100% certainty as she said, that "certified used"/refurb laptops warranties from Ibm-USA are only good for the USA and are in no way international

 Never trust a sellperson on the phone when you cannot have a written proof of what he's saying

As of now, I am comfused and really dont know if refurb thinkpads are under a international warranty. :x
I guess I will settle to buy from bill then
