Question on Virtual PC network firewall requirement

#1 Post by jgrobertson » Mon Aug 27, 2007 8:21 am

I installed XP in a Virtual PC under Vista 64.

I set up the networking in the Virtual PC to use "Shared Network (NAT) option on Adapter 1:

On Vista 64 I use the MS firewall and AVAST AV. I set the network in Vista to Allow other computers to connect to internet though the LAN.

Do I need to run a separate firewall in XP on the Virtual PC or does the internet traffic to the Virtual PC go through the Vista firewall?

Since you are using NAT, the traffic is going through the real, physical Host firewall. So you don't need an additional firewall in the NAT'd virtual machine (at least I don't firewall my NAT'd machines). ... JDH
