Dell 3007fpw and ATI X1300 Connection

#1 Post by jcuticchia » Tue Aug 28, 2007 7:00 pm

I purchased the Lenovo X1300 graphics card and installed it into my Advanced Dock (T60 docked). It has been working fine. I have now upgraded to a Dell 3007fpw which uses a dual dvi cable.

The X1300 has a Molex DMS-59 connector and a dongle which can split it into 2 dvi jacks. That isn't helpful.

Is there a way to make this work? Is there a cable that I am missing?

I have spent about 4 hours tracking this down and have come up with nothing. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

what you need is a dual link dvi cable / connection to get the WQXGA 2560x1600 your monitor needs.

an overview of the dvi interface
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvi

you need to check if your particular x1300 can do dual link dvi output. use the proper cable and you should be all set.

there is a lot of info on this if you search the forums.

** pls note that dual link does not mean 2 cables

The card that OP is referring to is here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67432

The card's documentation says that it comes with a Dual DVI splitter cable, with each DVI supporting dual-link DVI. So, it looks like you have the right card for what you want to do.

You need to connect the DVI splitter cable to the card's DMS59 connector, then connect a dual-link DVI cable between one fo the split cable ends and your 30" monitor. Finally, you need to go into Windows display properties and select 2560x1600 resolution for your external monitor.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

I solved the problem and thought I would give an update for anyone else who falls into my predicament.

GOAL: Connect a Dell 3007fpw (2560x1600) Dual-Link DVI to X1300 Graphics Card in an Advanced Dock for a T60.

The Lenovo version of the X1300 states that it is a Dual-Link DVI (meaning that all pins on the DVI connector are LIVE). Where I became confused was when I saw the connector on the X1300 card. It was a DMS-59 connector. The card came with a dongle of 2 DVI connectors when connected to the DMS-59. I made the assumption that NEITHER of the DVI connectors would be Dual-Link.

I was wrong. Connector #2 is a Dual-Link DVI connector. The way I learned this was that when I connected the Dual-Link DVI cable to the monitor the resolution choices changed from just 1280X1600 to 2560x1600.

Solved? No quite.

When I set the resolution to 2560x1600 all I got on the monitor was a bunch of vertical lines. I spent the better part of a day working with Catalyst and setting different parameters, but to no avail. Given the limited number of graphics cards supported in the dock, I was getting a bit worried about my options.

I decided to check the dongle (I have duplicate docs and cards) and still had the problem - rule out dongle.

I then bought a $70 Dual-Link DVI cable from Office Depot (closest option) and checked the cable --- nope. That isn't the problem.

Then I went to Circuit City and bought the VISIONTEK 512MB X1300 CARD. The main difference (other than the increased memory) was that the card had a Dual-Link DVI connector directly on the card (NO DONGLE NEEDED).

I fired up the dock, no problem. Hooked up the cable to the monitor and viola! 2560x1600. It took some minor tweaking with the setting in catalyst to get the picture.

So, if this is of any help:

(1) You can connect a Dell 3007fpw to an Advanced Dock
(2) The Visiontek X1300 512MB PCIe card works

Cheers.
