Safely Remove Hardrive re: CD-ROM

#1 Post by teknoT42 » Fri Oct 29, 2004 10:53 pm

Hi all, I am a new user to thinkpads.com and am learning by your forums :)
I just recently bought a T42 and have one annoyance,
In the taskbar near the clock it always shows the "safely remove hardware" icon so that I can safely remove the CD-ROM drive which I don't want to do..
I use a USB memory stick frequently and am always getting frustrated with having the cd-rom drive underneath it..

Does anyone know how I can make the CD-ROM not be read like a USB because i am never going to remove it, it is there to serve a purpose?

thanks

Wait a second, I think why you are not getting replies is I am having a bit of difficulty understanding what you are asking because I don't think you know what to ask. The removable device manager is what allows you to remove hot-swappable devices from the system. For example, you can hot-swap the CD-ROM with the UltraslimBay battery, so that is why it shows up there. The removable device manager has nothing at all to do with USB. And what on earth do you mean by underneath? The CD is on the right side, the USB is on the left. I fail to see how it could be underneath. I assume you mean on the screen, but that is not what you asked at all.

Anways, hope this helps. Next time it might be a good idea to read up via google.com or the Windows help on what the various buttons you are asking about are for so you can get the answers you are looking for.

Ok, sorry if i am confusing people the original question should be:

"How do I make the CD-ROM device bay permanent so it is not displayed in the hot-swap icon at the bottom of the taskbar?"

thanks

Dude, just yank the USB key and forget the removable device manager. I highly doubt you will lose data so long as you leave it for 5 seconds after your last write to it. On another note, I would suspect there is some command line way to remove a device that could be put into a script. Anyone know how to/
