Anyone here tweak there thinkpad?

#1 Post by teknoT42 » Fri Oct 29, 2004 11:38 pm

Howdy,
Has anyone here tweaked their thinkpad to improve the performance? I have done a few registry tweaks and was woundering what tweaks people here have done on their thinkpad to improve the performance?

Well I am a firm believer in tweaking however with my new T42p I am taking a different approach.

I am leaving everything in place for as long as I can to give the system a chance to "impress" me with its features. Some things I immediately ditched, like Digital Line Detect, since I never use my modem ... but, pretty much everything else is factory original.

I've noticed an improvement on boot after using the bootvis utility to optimize startup. I've also turned off Indexing and System Restore. Other than some additional misc. registry tweaks, that's all I've done. Defragging and modded ATI drivers for the FireGL T2 video for improved Doom3 performance, and that's it. :)

Agree with all these minor tweaks, and they're about the limit of what I've done with the laptop (desktops are of course another story).

Last month someone was talking about using an overclocking utility to up their 1.8GHz dothan to 2.0/2.1, same with the video chipset. Doesn't sound like something I'd really care to do because of the battery though.

Well if you ever plan to use System Restore, then you should leave it on. But some people just don't use the feature, and troubleshoot elsewhere if they have a problem. So they disable it, because it's of no value to them.. I have it turned off too. But my Indexing Service isn't turned off on the other hand.. I know it slows things down, but it makes searching for files faster. And when you have over 500,000 documents on your laptop, you need that fast search! Hehe

Disabled indexing as it's useless.
Set DisablePagingExecutive to Yes so as to keep some pageable kernal code in memory (not a huge benenfit but some).
Used to run with Large System Cache enabled but have now tuned it off (no benefit that I could see)
