Will an A51P run 64 bit Vista?

#1 Post by jgrobertson » Sat Sep 01, 2007 11:04 am

I am trying to figure out if my A51 (8427 CEU) with Pentium 4 (Intel 550) that supports hyper threading will run a 64 bit OS. Looking at the Intel site, it seams that the CPU at least emulates 64 bits if supported by the correct chip sets.

The device manager shows two CPUs just like my T60P with C2Duo does.

With the price of these things where it is at $450 on sale, it is hardly worth taking the time to figure it out. Just get a new one with C2Duo and faster FSB. But otherwise this machine works just fine and is plenty fast for what I do.

i am replying to my own post.

I have found that the A51p, while it passes the test from Microsoft, does not in fact run any version of Vista. It freezes on the install (clean or under Win XP) at the point where it has rebootede and is in the "completing installation" phase. It never finishes, even after all night.
