No Norton product will ever touch my system. In fact, the first thing I did when I got my machine was completely remove all traces of Norton. I've had weird experiences with it on a former Thinkpad and don't really like how 'invasive' it is in your system once installed. Plus, and most of this is from reading reviews and blogs/forums around the net, it's kind of bloated is it not?

Bloated, yes. I have found AVG to be every bit as effective, and in some cases, even more so when compared to my roommate's computer running Norton.

Is one of these considered the best?

I use Norton, because it came with the ThinkPad. I only have the complimentary 3 months updating though, so when that's up, I'll either update my subscription, or get something else.

Is there a strong recommendation?

LOOK the problem with these polls is that people view the majority voted as the best option...

If an option gets the majority it dosent in any way make it the best option

I have done my research.. if you are looking for a strong AV solution you must do your research to

but if your lazy... in my unbias opinion NOD32 is the most effective AV solution

and I am qualified to give an opinion

you are right...also, with just Norton as an option you don't get the full spectrum. I won't use the regular Norton 2004, etc. on my system, but do use Norton Professional. There is a big difference.

hehe - have always wondered, what makes one 'qualified'? :) I have a PhD myself, but I am far from qualified when it comes to making a suggestion for antivirus. Some of my students would even argue that I am not qualified to teach them, but that's a WHOLE other story... :)

Kind of building on what T42mbi rightly pointed out, by what measure is an antivirus 'good' or 'excellent'? I've never had an infection, so my AV (PC-Cillin) must be excellent.

Good vs. Better vs. Best

#8 Post by kjarrett » Sat Oct 30, 2004 4:28 am

Interesting poll. Personally I would never use anything other than Norton. Years back I used McAfee. It blew serious chunks. The update process was abysmal, the UI sucked, it was just crap. Switched to Norton and have never looked back.

I like Norton because it just WORKS. It gets its updates, scans quickly, and has been effective for me but I've rarely had a problem with virii. I did, once or twice, and Norton did its job.

I often reccommend Grisoft.com's free AVG antivirus, and in fact, install it on client PCs I find with now protection whatsoever - or an outdated copy of McAfee (which is very common).

Bottom line, Norton works ... for me. YMMV!

Yeah, I've always liked Norton too, but I've never really looked into other stuff.

The updates are quick and painlelss, and it seems to do everything well. The user interface is fine, and so far i haven't had any problems with virii at all.

But, I'm not all super computer pro either. I don't use IE, cause it sucks, and I try to stay away from bloated stuff, but I don't know anything about AV stuff.

I would think Kaspersky would have gotten more votes. Its found stuff that for YEARS Norton, McAfee, AVG never found

I voted for Other, because I use Symantec Client Security Corporate. That is *not* Norton AntiVirus Retail. Their Corporate product is very good and I like it a lot. It took a lot of vendor pressure to get me a license for one. ... JDHurst

Ditto, I'm running the latest version of Symantec Corp. I voted for Norton though (not sure why).

I like it a lot.

it's ALL about trend micro.. i don't care about the commercialized norton and mcaffee.. they're approach to solving the virus threat is to scan every [censored] thing that comes into your computer.. if you're a power use like myself.. you need the speed for your dev/graphics/compilation programs... and when i unloaded norton..my system performance was much better and it has saved me from virus' as well

I personally think Kaspersky is the best..
Norton and McAfee are too overated
Kaspersky updates its virus defenetions every 3 hours unlike norton!
AVG is free meh, but I paid for quality

I used Norton before, but starting with 2004 it just became way too bloated... Even on screaming fast desktops! And worse off, it didn't even detect viruses well... When I started looking for a new one, I was intrigued by Avast, which had like 94% positive out of over 600 ratings on Download.com... I tried it, and I love it! It's very easy on system resources, and it catches everything. It's taskbar icon also animates when it's scanning a file, so you know when your antivirus is working and when it's idle.. Try it out!

This is an interesting thread. Call me crazy but I don't have antivirus on my laptop.

I might give Avast a try. I know at work all machines have Norton.

I can't call you crazy hiengu, I ran without one for the longest time too... But not as of late, with all those worms going around! And last week, I set up a new computer for my parents, and believe it or not a worm got in no more than 10 minutes after Windows was installed!!! Before I had a chance to load an antivirus... I am not joking, I just had to format again, and install an antivirus before I went online.

none, what did you use to detect the worm?

I'm pretty careful when it comes to email attachments and downloading stuff. I've never gotten a virus actually. I used to use Norton but it never picked up anything so I just removed it.

I didn't detect it, it went ahead and actually infected the computer because nothing was stopping it... I noticed it because it started crashing everything, and there were a bunch of bogus tasks running...

After I installed Avast it did find it, but the worm also brought in a bunch of ad-ware, and god knows what else along side, so I decided to just format... After I formatted I installed Avast first thing, before even setting up the Internet.

I've had good luck using the free AVG anti-virus, it seems to do the job as well or better than any other I've tried, I also use the free version of Sygate firewall, with both of them running I feel very safe.

I've been pushing a friend for months to try AVG. The other day he called me to ask advice on new computers--he'd decided his was too old to run well. Then this morning he e-mailed me that he'd finally loaded AVG, and his computer was running MUCH faster. Now he's a happy camper, and saved $1000. AVG! AVG! AVG!
