Rescue & Recovery Failure Under Vista

#1 Post by ArtShapiro » Sat Sep 01, 2007 7:59 pm

The patient is a dual-boot XP/Vista T42. I've been backing up the Vista partition once a week with R&R 4.0 without incident for a couple months.

Today I can't complete a backup. I get the Windows popup "R2R has stopped working". Whether or not I terminate R&R, the backup process (br_funcs or something close to that) runs for an acceptable time, taking the usual majority of the CPU according to task manager, and the external hard drive used for backup gets heavily used. The progress bar for the backup application fails to advance, and the backup is never closed after the hard drive has stopped showing any I/O activity.

The immediate hypothesis is that one of the several Vista updates that installed over the past week has broken Rescue & Recovery.

Can anyone under similar circumstances confirm whether a backup can now be successfully performed with R&R 4.0?

r2r.exe

X61S/Vista HB: I get the same error message "r2r.exe had to close" after (apparently successful) incremental backup to CD using Vista backup. I have not used TV backup, only Vista. The files on my backup CD look reasonable, i. e., the updated files seem to be there.

I Google "r2r.exe" and see the Lenovo patch to XP to fix this error but am reluctant to apply it to this Vista machine.

1) How can I be sure that my backup is sound?
2) Should I apply this patch to this Vista machine?
3) Should I be using TV backup instead of Vista backup?
