How to buy?

#1 Post by crose » Sun Sep 02, 2007 5:33 am

Hi,

I would like to buy a Thinkpad in the US and have it delivered to a address in the US but I do not live in the US nor do I have US issued CC.

I had already configured a nice T61 at Lenovo's US site but they require that shipping and billing address are the same. I have used my Visa debit card at many other US sites. Amazon for example does allow me to have different shipping and billing address.

Any suggestion what to do? Is there a way around Lenovo's website limitation or is there any other vendor who will accept my Visa and are willing to send to the US address?

Sir, if you're in the US at this moment then please call 1-866-96-THINK and explain your situation. Otherwise there are many IBM business partners in the US that ships internationally, Euclid computers is one of them.

With many cards you can just call the issuing bank and tell them you'd like to add an authorized shipping location onto the card, that should allow most places to ship to those locations. I know I have to do that with Newegg and my AmEx card.

I'd like to bump this thread too as I'm experiencing nearly exactly the same situation here:

wanting to buy something from Lenovo, and having a good friend receive it in Chicago. I have a portuguese Visa card and a french Mastercard, but how on earth could I pay for it if I don't have the necessary "billing adress"? I don't see how I could phone any of my banks and tell them to add an adress in Chicago, USA... :?:

Could someone help me out here? Is there something I could do to sort this out?

TIA!

Send the funds to your friend via Paypal and have him pay for your Lenovo item(s) with his card?

Erm... assuming that my friend has a card - which she has - I have no problem to pay her. The thing is that I'd rather not have her bother on doing things for me AND the fact that she's moved recently so her billing adress and shipping adress are not the same right now... she's trying to update them but apparently the bank is asking for loads of infos, loads of papers to be filled and I'm just afraid that by the time they finally do it will be too late to place the order... what a drag!

tomorrow should be business as usual at lenovo sales.   the day after thanksgiving is what we call "black friday" because it's the busiest shopping day of the year. :)

The other day, I saw that the patron of forum.thinkpads.com, Bill Morrow, offered this:
BillMorrow in thread IBM Factory Refurbished Units - Safe to buy? (see the post of Thu Nov 22, 2007 8:54 am) wrote:p.s. if anyone from outside the USA wants to buy, pay for and ship a thinkpad here, i will ship it to them for a fee of $100 + the shipping cost..
as long as i don't have to open the box or do anything other than trans-ship..
Although said in connection with buying used/refurbished ThinkPad's, I would imagine that the offer still stands for new ThinkPad's as well, but ask Bill yourself - he is known to be a very, very kind and highly helpful person! :-)

Oops, I forgot to mention this: Remember to make sure that the ThinkPad you buy is supported by the IBM International warranty service (IWS) - check this at the IBM IWS site. If you search this forum for "extending warranty" and/or for "IWS", you will find quite a few recent threads discussing these issues. Hey; did you ever hear about the company "Access USA"? If not, have a look in the thread: For out of the US buyers - Access USA. Finally, perhaps the thread T61p availability with IWS and the links pointed to therein, might be of interest to browse... check it out!

Keep us posted of how you end up solving this problem - thanks. So what's more now left to say than: Best of luck with your hopefully very-soon-to-be new ThinkPad! :thumbs-UP:

Best regards,

Johan

@ Johan, thanks, I'll bear that in mind ;)

(actually I'm aiming for the Thinkvision L220x 8) , a thinkpad might come at some point next year ;))

@ ryengineer, would you care to explain? can I get an American Express card if I live outside the US? How would I have the same shipping / billing adress? How could I get delivered to my friend's place?

Item Price + Tax + 100$ Fee ( With All Due respect to Admin) + Shipping + Import tax (If you are a honest guy):= A lot of cash!!!

I think you should better buy the laptop from this Forum or eBay.

Forgive me if I say something wrong.

Diehard, it is a $100.00 fee, not 100%. There is a lot of difference.

That is a big difference indeed!

Anyway that still bears the same problem: how to pay for the item and have it shipped to Bill? :?:

I think that Bill used to buy it himself and you bought it from him. You need to ask him if he still does this. Send him a PM.

I live in Canada and had a friend in the US order a T61p for me . He didn't ask for anything in return but I gave him extra $100 for his trouble.
So I think $100 for someone helping someone whom they don't know is very reasonable imo. However in my case I didn't have to pay duty or shipping.

Pardon my ignorance, but aren't you likely to have a voltage issue with this, since you're in France?

That's a very small fee ($100) for a complete peace of mind.

actually, he'll be fine.   specson the L220x say input voltage is 90 to 264V A/C (+/-10%) and frequency is 50/60Hz (+/-3Hz).   france is 230V @ 50Hz.

Please don't get me wrong. 100$ is OK, but I mean the whole process will cost a lot of money.

US Tax = 1x %
Fee=$100
Shipping ~ $70
Import Tax = 19% (in Germany)

I heard that in US, someone could ask to pay to export tax !?

Just to make sure, they don't ask you to pay the taxes in the US customs, at checking in, right, but rather at the destination country after you've landed right? If someone is bringing something with him on the airplane, that is.

You have a good point, but, as Erik stated, there's a lot of electronic appliances that work both with 110v and 230v ~50Hz :D

for the $100 fee I will ship the item to you. Do all the research you wish and make sure you paypal me the exact amount of money to purchase the item as you wish+tax+paypal fees+actual shipping amount and I would take care of that for you. Make sure all the warranty stuff is international and EVERYTHING. All i will do is purchase the item after your payment to me is cleared, when it is delivered to me I will have it shipped however you wish and pay for, and all will be good. Im an honest person and God fearing, Im not out to get people, just help.
