VESA DOS text modes on any T-series?

#1 Post by Edward Mendelson » Wed May 26, 2004 5:18 pm

I still use DOS programs that can use VESA text modes in addition to VESA graphics. Do any ThinkPad T4x models support these?

One reason I ask is that I've got a loaner Dell Inspiron (horrible machine) with an ATI Radeon Mobility chip that doesn't support VESA text modes at all, and I expect that the same problem will occur with the ATI chip in the Thinkpads.

Thanks for any information...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think *any* modern computers can support VESA. I know that my old Voodoo3 2000 couldn't, neither could my Geforce 2 GTS nor my current Geforce 4 4200. The only way it can be done, AFAIK, is to use a program like DosBox to emulate VESA.

Hmmm... Every Nvidia-based card I've used or tried in the past few years can handle VESA graphics and text modes, but I think only with CRT monitors, not flat panels. Are you using a flat-panel monitor? Also, in Windows XP, you need Nvidia's own drivers, not the driver that ships with XP.

I hope no one will object if I revive this thread. I just got a T42 with 1024x768 14.1-inch screen. Superb machine in every way. The only thing I miss is VESA graphics in DOS applications under XP, which were supported on my old 600X. Does anyone know if any T4x series models support VESA graphics, or am I essentially asking if anyone has installed a drinking fountain for dinosaurs?

Thanks for any information.
