AHCI? (Pics)

Does anyone know that AHCI does? I've read that it connects software to the harddrive more directly but does this mean that its faster? and should it be turned on?

I just reinstalled vista with AHCI turned on in the bios. I ran HD Tach with compat. mode and then in AHCI mode.

Look at the graphs. AHCI is making disk operations much more fluent. The speed is also upped by 5% so by all means, do reinstall with ahci.

Another thing I noticed was that indexing is more than one place in vista... and it's not the same thing...

If you select properties on your drives, and deselect indexing you'll experience an immense increase in system response. THIS IS IT!!!

Indexing should run in the background but really doesn't...

another thing about that was that i had a huge folder that was compressed by windows.. imagine indexing that... it was 200gb or so!!!

There is also another indexing in "turn off/on windows features" in the control panel, and another one also in the control panel called indexing options... I really don't know if these do anything..

Also defragmentation could be killing your system, so execute defrag and disable the planned runs and do it once every 14 days, (depends on your usage).

could you confirm me that when AHCI is turned on in the bios it appears in the sata control in grey ?

Indeed I checked in my bios (a brand new x61s) and I see that AHCI is in grey, and grey usually means "not available". Maybe it is not the case in the computer language ?

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I've taken some pictures on my mobile phone you can look at.

My options is 'compatibel' & 'AHCI' - so theres really no question about wethere achi is on or not. But that could be my bios thats different from yours... anyways a pictures speak more than a 1000 words!
