A PC Inside the 2631 Dock

#1 Post by TomKroscavage » Tue Sep 04, 2007 9:01 am

What I would like to do is turn my 2631 dock into something like a server. This is what I have to get started.

PCI card

3x u2 riser card

I will mount my dock on top of an old IBM desktop case drop the PCI cards inside the case. I will add hard drives, DVD burner, USB floppy drive and a video card, But what I really want to do is mount a full blown PC under the dock. When I snap a thinkpad into the dock the two computers become one The PC taking over the heavy work also for back-up and syncing all my compatible thinkpads.

My question is, can two computers be combined to act as one? If so how?

RE: Dock-server

The only way that I can think of doing this without any extremely major modifications would be to have either SSH (which my brother uses) or a VNC program (not Window's remote desktop either, I use tightVNC.) If using VNC, it might be a good idea to have two network card in the PC, and use the dock to add a 10/100/1000 card to bath. Directly wire those two cards to be in a crossover configuration for a fast enough connection to control the server without much of a lag problem. If you want to look into something better, but harder, look up clusters.

Hope this helps!
