How Many Processes Are You Running?
How Many Processes Are You Running?
Hey All,
If your press CTR-ALT-DEL > TaskManager
In the bottom left hand corner it shows the number of processes running.
On my thinkpad there are 35 Running

Haha, in perhaps the most misguided form of one-upsmanship ever, I've got 54 processes eating up 442mb right now! I wonder what's putting me over the topRCube wrote:I got 52 at the moment...using about 441mb of memory... 1gb of ram sure comes handy.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

You can load Task Manager automatically as follows:
1. Put C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe in your startup folder.
2. Set it to run minimized.
3. Set Task Manager options to hide when minimized.
Then Task Manager will load automatically in the System Tray as a CPU usage icon. No registry hacks required or advisable.
I have 67 process running on my T41 and 47 processes running on my NetVista A30 desktop. Both machines run with just under 400Mb free (out of 768 total). ... JDHurst

i would like to speed up my PC (including the startup time) so i assume the best way to do this is turn off services/processes in msconfig. i have turned some off but can anyone help me turn more off?
i thought there was a way to put all the things running in a text document and then there's a webpage or forum of people that know which ones are good and bad to turn off and how they are affected? also, you can edit the groupedit.msc or something like that or go into admin tools and disable services that you don't need.
but i'm not sure which ones to edit so any help would be appreciated. i have 60 processes running and "only" 512mb ram and this computer isn't any faster than my a30p from 3 years ago

T42p (2378-DYU) 1.8GHz | 15"UXGA+ | 512MB | 80GB128MB ATI FireGL T2 | IBM 802.11a/b/g | BT | WinXP Pro SP2
57 processes using about 200Mb but so what ? Agreed that my boot up may be bit slower but once the system is up and running they're all idle most of the time. It's not the number of processes that's the factor it's what they're doing. Take a look at the processes tab in Task manager and I'll bet they're all idling away (ie consuming no CPU). As for memory, well if you do need to start paging, those pages of the idle guys get stolen first (as they're the oldest).

The quickest way to start Taskmgr by keyboard is using CTRL-SHIFT-ESC.teknoT42 wrote:press CTR-ALT-DEL > TaskManager
Process Explorer from SysInternals is a very good Task Manager replacement for tracking down issues with processes:

...not under windows, though.
The memory, well, I think it's way better for a system to _use_ the available memory. What's much memory good for otherwise?
But theres no point in counting processes to measure someones ability to administrate a system anyway, imho

I Suggest It's Silly To Obsess on No. of Processes Running..
...loaded in memory. As others have posted, your notebook's actual performance should be the focus. It might be instructive to open task manager (or Sysinternal's excellent Process Explorer tool) and monitor how many CPU cycles the various processes consume. However, being a programmer myself, I only do that when a specific problem occurs.
For the knowledgeable and adventurous (and I stress knowledgeable) ThinkPad owner, you can consult the Black Viper web site for information on the various Windows XP services (updated to SP2) and whether they can and should be turned off given your particular configuration.
