CPU will not go above 598 mhz

#1 Post by synapse » Sat Oct 30, 2004 11:25 pm

Hi-
I have a 1.6ghz Centrino processor but I have noticed that it never runs about 598 mhz. I notice applications to be a little slow and lag once and a while and I think it might be due to this. I have it set on "High System Performance" and I have looked at the speed while scanning for viruses and importing a large album of photos into Adobe Photoshop Album. Does anyone know what might be causing this or how to fix it? If there is something else I can do to test what speed it is running at or if there is a certain action I should run please let me know. I'd really appreciate any help with this. Thanks-
-Dan

Download mobilemeter

http://dssc3031.ece.cmu.edu/~tamaru/mob ... adme-e.htm

Run it and then run some cpu intensive stuff, does it show 600MHz or 1.6GHz?

also, you can set it to full speed rather than automatic..

found in the power settings..

You can also try loading the defaults in your BIOS if Mobile Meter indicates that you really are only running at 598 MHZ.

At least for me, a factory installation will have my CPU in adaptive mode which means if it's not requiring much processing power it runs in the lower 600Mhz speed but increases to 1700 mhz when needed for more intensive. You might be experiencing the lag of going from 600 to 1600 for you so switching to "High Performance" would keep things at max speed.

The drawback I find with not using CPU in adaptive mode is that the fan on my T41 will run a little louder if not stressed since the CPU runs hotter.

Do you have your battery inside? I dunno about Pentium M CPUs, but the P4 in my T30 refuses to run full speed unless the battery is inside.

IBM said that this is because sometimes the power outlet doesn't provide enough juice for full speed, and when such a "hickup" occurs, the battery supplements your laptop.

I can't say their explanation sounds too convincing, but I can't do much about it :P

CPU Speed

Hello,

There is very nice utility called SpeedSwitchXP to control your CPU speed. Sometimes Windows own contorol system is not reliable. You can easily find it from google.

Hm... I downloaded Mobile Meter and it shows full CPU speed but the My Computer properties still show it as being lower. :? I am ok with this I guess since I will believe the Mobile Meter first. Thanks for your help! That is a great little app!
