Advice sought - prepaid WWAN usage in USA

#1 Post by dwaynel » Thu Sep 06, 2007 10:12 am

Hi all,

just after some friendly advice here.

I'm an Aussie heading to the USA in a few weeks for a short holiday with the family. Spending a week in Las Vegas, about 4 or 5 days in Anaheim, and 2 or 3 days in San Diego.

I'm taking my trusty X60 with me, which has the WWAN and slot for a SIM card in it.

I'd like some advice as to the best way to achieve access to broadband internet. I don't really fancy paying $12 a day or so for hotel internet, and would prefer if possible to use the WWAN with a prepaid service. I've checked out the cingular/AT&T and VerizonWireless sites, but can't really see if there is a prepaid plan available that will allow me to use my WWAN card.

Anyone able to offer me any advice on whether such plans are available ?

Appreciated, thanks

Try posting on Howard Forums.com and see if T-Mobile or Sprint have something like that.

Many of the hotels in this country offer free internet. Either wired or wireless. Check on the hotels you plan to be staying at.

Another option is T-Mobile Hotspots that use your WiFi connection. These Hotspots are located in nearly every Starbucks and several other franchise stores. See following link for WWAN and WiFi options. T-Mobile is probably your best bet for reasonable pricing.

Another thing, the only national WWAN providers that use SIM cards are T-Mobile and at&t wireless. Your WWAN device must be unlocked or carrier locked to one of the two above carriers for you to be able to use your WWAN device here. Sprint and Verizon are the other two national carriers, but they use different technology that your current WWAN device is incompatible with. Also check the bands that your device uses. In the US, we use the 850 Mhz and 1900 Mhz bands for GSM.

Most hotel chains are converting to free wireless. As I used to work for Holiday Inn, and one of there marketing deals is free wireless.
