Access Connections on T41p: driver update vs IBM support

#1 Post by odin » Thu Sep 06, 2007 11:50 am

1. Have anybody with XP on their T series tried to update AC to the latest version?
Normally, it does not seem to be a problem to select the needed driver from the driver matrix, does it? Not this time. The issue is described below, in the bottom email.
If somebody knows what is to be used, please post here - and many thanks in advance!

2. The support from IBM I received today via email is below. If somebody told me IBM can reply like this, I would've been laughing into his face. Not any more.
My phone call to IBM support in EMEA (turned out to be redirected to the UK) I followed up with the email to give details. The reply was very quick.

The reply is on top.

[Odin],

The Thinkpad T41 is considered "Obsolete" as in, no drivers will be created for it anymore, since Lenovo has bought IBM's production and will discontinue the production, however, to solve your issue as it is now, there should be a software on your computer called "System Update" which will automatically update everything on your computer to the latest version, try usin that first, that should solve all of your problems, and the confusion with it saying "vista-this vista-that" is just misprinted as they've taken the text from another model and not edited it well enough, I'm afraid.

We have discussed the issue on the phone. Here is, again, the
description, with the links:

On my T41p (2373-GEG, s/n ...) I have factory-installed WinXP PRO
SP1. Update of Access Connections to the latest ver. 4.42 requires me,
prior to updating, to have Hotkey Features for Windows Vista/XP/2000
ver. 2.01.0703 or higher installed. For Win XP, there are 2 versions of
the Hotkey indicated (see
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46258).
One is v1.31.0610 for "Win 98/Me/NT4.0/2000/XP", which is "lower" than
the one required by the AC. The other Hotkey Features v2.06.0708 shown
for "Win Vista/XP/2000" is only for Win Vista on T41p (see
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-68000).
Which one should be used for the XP on T41p?

Please reply to the email. Thank you.

If you are still running XP SP1, pragmatically you are own your own as far as any software support is concerned, whether you like it or not.

Cheers,

Unless you have Vista installed on your T4x, you must use version 1.x of the Hotkey driver. Version 2 of the Hotkey driver only works with Vista on the T4x series (version 2 of the Hotkey driver is correct for XP on newer ThinkPads than the T4x series). If you read the fine print on the driver download page, you will see this.

FWIW, I have the latest version 1.x of the Hotkey driver and Access Connections 4.42 installed on my T42 and it works fine.

GomJabbar,

Installed Hotkey v1.., Access Conn-s v4.42. Looks like it is working fine!
Thank you for the info!

bill bolton,

It wasn't really my bragging about lack of support for the "obsolete" model, rather the confusion from that driver description and - most obviously - from the way the support replied! I guess, I am back to normal rpm now.

PS: Profile fixed. Thanks for the hint!
