MUST HAVE FREEWARE - High Resolution freaks & power user
I am not sure if a lot of you here are already aware of this FREE application but I remember looking for it once and it has always been in my system tray.
The thing is it was so OMNIPRESENT that I did not share it with anyone. So I am sharing it now.
Minimal memory / CPU but ultimate in functionality & quick use.
- Want to resize windows for checking websites at certain resolutions?
- Want to have some apps dock to the left or right and take up a certain amount of workspace on your desktop?
... this and more.
I've defined some profiles I use a lot.
-640x480
-800-600
-1024x768
(..for web testing)
- Half Left (Sizes & positions window to occupy LEFT HALF of Desktop)
- 3/4 Left
- Dashboard (Sizes & positions window to LEFT side of Desktop but sized enough to LEAVE room on the right hand side for Instant Messaging e.g. Trillian, Yahoo, GTalk & other similar Slim & Tall applications)
- Half Right (Similar to half left)
I use half & 3/4 left & right a lot of times to dock windows while I play around on the other side. Even use for comparing & viewing 2 documents / windows at the same time.
This is on a 17" Dell 9300 WUXGA.
FREEWARE for all you people.

Re: MUST HAVE FREEWARE - High Resolution freaks & power
why is this app better than resizing manually?

It quickly maps to sizes you want as well as places windows where you want.
Its like having QUICK / SHORTCUT to "what you do FREQUENTLY" with your app windows.
It also shows you CURRENT size as & when you RESIZE any window.
I guess no one here was as excited about it as I was when I found it / used it and now its part of my MUST HAVE.
Once you realize the convenience you'll get it.

Nice utility, thanks for the heads up.

See... finally I have someone recognizing the BENEFIT of such a tool.mattbiernat wrote:why is this app better than resizing manually?
I figure PW would definitely like it given the AMOUNT of POINTER travel one has to go through on a HIGH RES screen.

Thats probably because of the vector graphics thing in Vista that allows window scaling. So the guy might have to rewrite some of those 'sizing' dynamics into RELATIVE (vector on Vista) versus ABSOLUTE (resolution / fix DPI based on XP) numbers.erik wrote:hah, this is awesome! i wrote javascript code to resize my browser window for website testing and now i can do it much more easily.
great find! thanks!
edit: i just noticed that it doesn't work under vista.

This sounds like the ideal tool I've been thinking about. However, doesn't look like there is an updated version for Vista. Is there anything similar for Vista? The other function that would be awesome would be preventing the edges of windows from being scrolled off the screen.

Another cool tool some of you may find of interest is Microsoft Scaleable Fabric. This allows you to define a screen area outside of which windows are iconified and get smaller the farther you move away from the border. You can also group a bunch of the icons together and manipulate them as one. Pretty nifty. Really handy for doing my Cisco labs in Packet Tracer.
