T61p 14" SXGA+ Screen Quality

#1 Post by doherrick » Fri Sep 07, 2007 8:57 am

Does anyone have an opinion of the quality of the 14" sxga+ screen?

Seems like there are only opinions on the 15.4" wide screen posted

Thanks

ThinkPad's 14" SXGA+ panels have been the worse TN panels on the notebook market, followed by 12" XGA in X series. No contrast, very poor viewing angles, excessive backlight bleeding. I don't think it might change.

I have an SXGA+ screen on my thinkpad and I can tell it is nothing special, however... I have no real problems with it. It does its job and really doesn't look half bad as long as you aren't constantly compairing to other screens. There is some backlight bleeding that you can see on a black screen, poor contrast, kinda dim, and kinda blueish in color unless you calibrate your colors.

Reading this has probably turned you way off of the SXGA+ screen, but my opinion is if you ok with an average looking screen, you should be alright. If you are looking for an excellent display, look elsewhere.

Thanks for your comments.

My T61p sxga+ will be delivered today but I already made arrangemets to return it (no restock fee). I was very uncomfortable purchasing the T61p without seeing the display but decided to go ahead because 80% of the time I use my external NEC LCD1990SXi and the recent deep discounts made it seem like an easy choice.

I will purchase a loaded X61t, vga model, instead. The X61t is more than adequate for my needs and I can use the tablet feature in my work. I have seen the screen on the X61t vga and it is fine for my eyes and needs. I very much prefer 3:4 over wide screen so my choices are very limited.

I have a 760ED (retired) and an A31p that I use 8-10 hours/day. I put my 5 year old A31p next to a 1 year old T60p flexview and, to my eyes, the A31p was better in all aspects except it was a little dimmer. At non-native resolutions (1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024) the A31p was much better. I don't think any current laptop display would make me happy.

I have a 14.1" T61p, and the most noticeable aspect of the TMD screen is an extreme blue tint. Colors were way off. I did correction with an Eye-One Display 2 and the difference is dramatic. With correction, the screen is perfectly acceptable, imho.

It's kind of pricey to buy, can I borrow yours? :)

Seriously, the product is advertised as allowing you to use it on multiple systems. Find a bunch of friends and chip in, I really think that it's one of the best investments you'll ever make. Mine was $199.

if you do decide to buy one, the lowest i've seen is $179.99 at norman camera in kazoo, mi.   i've been to their store a few times and can vouch for them as a reseller.

i've never found a notebook/desktop display that was accurate right out of the box.   plus, ambient lighting (ie; sunlight vs. tungsten vs. fluorescent) changes how displays appear and can be dramatic enough to require re-calibration.   borrowing a calibrator is only a temporary solution.

Is TMD the only manufacturer of T61P 14.1'' SXGA+ screen?
If the screen uses FFS IPS technology, should be even better than Flewview IPS.

Nope, the only IPS panels were 15" in the past and later 12" for the tablet .

The FFS IPS screen from BOE-Hydis is used on the X61t XGA. That's why I decided to return my T61p and order the X61t.
