Data Error Using T42p Recovery Disc No. 1

#1 Post by bvaughn » Fri Sep 07, 2007 3:18 pm

I made a set of "Product Recovery Discs" for my T42p. When I attempt to "Restore factory contents" using those discs, an error message appears while Disc No. 1 is being processed. The message is: error copying file D:\Recovery\CMAPBUS.IMD. Error 23:Data error (cyclic redundancy check). This message appears before the progress bar in the info box for Disc No. 1 has reached the end of its track.

I don't know the meaning of this message or whether the error is fatal, but it appears not to be fatal, since when I click "OK" in the error-message box, a dialog box immediately appears instructing me to insert Disc No. 2, which I do, and the entire process apparently goes forward.

After the processing of Disc No. 6, a dialog box informs me that the computer must be restarted to complete the process. I click on "Yes" to restart, leaving Disc No. 6 in its drive. The BIOS startup option is set for the hard drive. (The problem described below occurs also if I remove the disc from its drive before restarting or if the startup option is set for the CD drive.)

Problem: When the computer restarts, the "Rescue and Recovery" program is launched, and the "Restore factory contents" information box is displayed -- meaning that the recovery process is starting over from the beginning (apparently). If I click "OK" to continue, I see the warning that the recovery process will delete everything on the hard drive. At this point, I give up and turn off the computer. On restarting the computer, I see that this problem recurs.

Thus it seems that the computer is stuck in a loop. Does anyone have a suggestion for getting out of this situation?

It sounds like the disk is bad. When you click to continue, it is skipping the rest of the files on that disk (not good).

I admit it's confusing, but when you use the Product Recovery Disc set, after rebooting you are indeed back into Rescue and Recovery. From here you have to choose to Restore Factory Contents again without any CD's in the drive. The restore takes place from the files already copied to your hard drive.

Regarding the CRC error, that usually means the file is corrupted. Your CD was either damaged or the file didn't copy to the CD properly to begin with. Hopefully this isn't an important file.

Data Error Using T42p Recovery Disc No. 1

Thanks for your replies.

If there's a corrupted file on Disc No. 1, or the disc was flawed, then I'm between a rock and a hard place, since I can't make another set of discs. When I made the discs, Disc No. 1 was written and was verified the same as the other discs, so I'm a little mystified by the error. So I guess I'll have to plead for mercy from Lenovo tech support.
