Another successful systemboard upgrade

#1 Post by FTC » Sat Sep 08, 2007 5:47 pm

Some weeks ago my old and good T40 (2373-7BU) started showing the 'loose GPU syndrome' sympthoms. I can not complain too much because this thinkpad has been subject to some abuse, specially being on folding 24x7 for the last 4 years (almost its whole life), plus being used to work in the field during the first 2 years, and lately (once I bought the T42) submitted to some heavy gaming also by the kids at home.. and at the same time overclocked.

So I took the plunge and bought a T42 systemboard through eBAY quite cheaper than direct IBM.. (PN 39T5451),... this one with a Radeon 9600 instead of the 7500... I though that if I was going to run the risk,... let's gain something in exchange!.. and as a bonus, active protection.

Well, just finished installing it and upgrading all software and it works perfect. I have to say that the IBM's HMM manual is brilliant.
Anybody can do this, but it takes a bit of work and discipline (took me 3.5 hours to do the hardware thing, and about 1-2 additional ones to test and upgrade everything, including resinstall of the new drivers, recording the EEPROM with the serial number, upgrading bios, patches, ... so if anyone has any doubt/question, I'll gladly respond.
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430
