New t23 - No screen display for volume.

#1 Post by billbot » Sun Sep 09, 2007 10:51 am

Greetings.
I recently picked up a used t23. I did not get any cd's or software of any kind with it. Someone put on a new install of Win XP SP2.

I downloaded most of the drivers and such from the Lonovo web site; however, I found it very confusing and poorly laid out.

I have the matrix thinkpad configuration center running, but many of the drivers I downloaded didn't seem to install properly.

One thing that is bugging me: I have no screen display for some of the custom buttons on my think pad. For instance, when I use the volume buttons, I hear a little "splock" sound, but I don't see any on-screen graphics for it.

Does anyone have a good link to a driver for this? What about trying to get original restore disks?

Thanks!

When you use Microsoft's Sound icon, there on no on-screen widgets displayed - only the Microsoft volume tool. To change the settings of this tool, go to Contol Panel -> Sounds.

When you use the ThinkPad dedicated sound keys or Fn-Keys (cannot remember all ThinkPads), then the on-screen widget should so (install the HotKey driver).

The behaviour above is for my T41, was certainly true for my prior T30, and I believe (but not sure) the same is true for my long gone prior, prior T23. ... JDH

You can use the "Automatic Update" feature from the IBM site. It really did a nice job for my T20 while I was doing a fresh install of XP on it.

For this you need to first download "Microsoft.NET Framework 2" from the "Microsoft Download Site" and install it. Then go to the IBM's "Support & Downloads" section. Narrow down your search by chosing your model and OS. Then choose the "Automatic update feature" from any of the search pages. It is indicated by a red coloured circle with 2 nos of opposite_facing vertical arrows inside it. You can even choose to activate the "Automatic Model No. Finder" option which makes things a little easier.

The 'Original Restore Disks' will not do anything extra except the "IBM proprietary Utilities" which were meant for this model. Personally I do not think them to be of much use. They rather slow down things a bit, and many actually spend more time in removing them.

Cheers
Aditya

If you downloaded those drivers individually, then it is a two step process. You have to download them which goes through a process that appears to be installing them, but in reality it is creating the folders for them. You would still have to run the exe files...

As stated above, using the system updater is a lot easier. it downloads and installs them for you.

Yes - it unpacks to catalog usually on C:\DRIVERS\WIN\HOTKEY and from here you start the setup.exe.
