Processor runs hotter *after* dusting??

#1 Post by SIZZ-LORR!! » Mon Sep 10, 2007 6:41 am

Normally, while playing games (or copying files, un-RARing something, etc) at the highest processor speed, my temps would only go as high as 80 or 81 degrees. Normally at 2 GHz it would idle around 65 or so, and at 800 MHz it would idle at 55 and max at about 70.

Yesterday I decided to crack the case and give it a good dusting inside, so I opened everything up and blew it with some canned air. I didn't remove any heatsinks or do anything funky with the processor. Now the processor idles at 50 on any speed, but as soon as I switch it to full speed, the temperature ROCKETS up to 82 (and by 'rockets', I mean it increases by at least 2 degrees per second) without any processor load! Even worse, if I do load the processor in any way (file copy, games, what have you), it goes even higher to about 92... a number I've never even reached on this laptop before. It gets unstable and freezes more often now, too.

I haven't left it working on something long enough to see if it goes any higher than 92, but what's the deal? All I did was dust a bit. Could I have messed something up while taking the case apart or putting it back together?

I have been using NHC for a while, practically since I got the laptop. No change in HDD temps. I haven't checked GPU temps. This is a T43 with a 2 GHz processor (Dothan maybe? Will check later). Let me know if further info is needed.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

With much gratitude,
