To T61p users

Hi, all

I've a T42p 15' and I ask myself for a T61p 15'
Is the T61p quality the same level as the T42p ?
What can we expect for 2008 models ?

The T61p screen doesn't have Flexview, and is widescreen.

There is also a 14.1'' 4:3 version of T61P.

I want a 15' and I dream of a 17'

The widescreen is not a problem but the Flex is important .
Do you think the built quality is up/down about the T42 ?

here are my thoughts on the subject since i own both a T61p WUXGA and a T42p IPS UXGA...

- the T61p is built better, stronger, and more logically
- the T61p is easily two times faster than the T42p with equal operating systems installed
- the T42p's IPS UXGA display is better overall but the 15.4" WUXGA is excellent in itself
- 1920x1200 is more usable than 1600x1200 (for what i do), regardless of viewing angles
- IPS is gone and the only alternative is a T60p or an external IPS display
- 2008 will bring upgrades for sure but no one knows exactly when they will happen
- 64-bit vista and 64-bit applications will need to progress further before the next major upgrade matters (ie; 4+ GB memory, true 64-bit processing, etc.)

if the T42p serves your purposes then keep it and wait for the next upgrade. if the T61p would suit your needs better then get one.

keep in mind that just because a new computer is released, you don't need to buy it unless it fills a void found in your current equipment. i upgraded because i needed 4GB memory support and SATA support where everything else (WUXGA display, faster processor, etc.) were simply added bonuses.

Is the SATA really improves HD speed ?
I've seen you've à 7K200 SATA and I've à 7K100 PATA which is 49 MB/s with HDTach

i needed SATA support simply because of the hitachi 200GB 7K200. i have the 7K200 in the main drive slot and a 100GB 7K100 in the ultrabay.

if you can hold off another year then that's what i'd recommend. x64 architecture needs time to mature and i strongly feel that we'll see it happen in under a year's time.

I'll do that coz I don't need x64 and I want wait for the SP1 of Vista.
I'm a finance advisor and I've a professional software which badly works with Vista

unfortunately SATA is the only way to get an internal 200 or 250GB HDD. the SATA ultrabay adapter will work in the T42p and can add SATA drive support, but unfortunately it would be difficult to use as a main drive since the CD/DVD drive has been removed.

if i keep my T61p then it'll be an interim solution. lately i've been asking myself if i should just keep my T42p and upgrade in a year when x64 vista has better support, photoshop and illustrator go 64-bit, and we can install 8GB+ total memory in thinkpads.

the problem is that i really like the WUXGA screen even though it's not flexview.

I'm waiting for a realistic review of SSD PATA & SATA
For the moment I've heard differents views and not able to make my point.
An efficient PATA SSD will be a good solution for waiting a while coz I really like my 2 years intensively used T42p.
A 32/64 GB SSD and the 7K100 in the U-Bay will be OK.
What's your point about the SSDs ?

the problem is that i really like the WUXGA screen even though it's not flexview.

UXGA is perfect for PShop and even for surfing ....I use Opera at 120% for being easily readable.

There is a 250GB PATA HDD now, though with only 5400 rpm.

I prefer the 7K100 , 100 GB... it's enough for me

7200rpm is faster and à WD 250 GB USB2 for external storage to be plugged anywhere.

2007 T61 are just out and all models are still not aviable. But we can expect form 2008 models less then 2009 models... And of course far less then 2010 models.

2008 can bring :
- DDR2-800
- non draft 802.11n
- Led screen
- 45 nm Core 2 Duo
- second gen DirectX 10 GPU
- More SSD

2009 :
- FSB 1066 MHz
- Third gen DirectX 10 GPU
- DDR3
- Quad Core
- 802.11n working fine
- Faster, bigger and cheaper SSD
- Some fuel cell

2008 Q1 will bring penryn, the 45nm die shrink of current processors, not a major upgrade.
2008 Q4/2009Q1 will bring the nehalem architecture, which WILL be a major upgrade: DDR3 support, integrated memory controller, FSB will be eliminated.
