T61p Additional RAM Question

#1 Post by jhrain » Mon Sep 10, 2007 8:25 am

I've ordered a T61p with a single 2Gig DIMM.

A couple of simple questions. :?:

1. Should I have ordered two 1Gig sticks to take advantage of the dual channel?

2. If I add a second 2Gig stick, I realize both XP and Vista 32bit will recognize it as a Gig, essentially giving me a total of 3Gig, correct?

3. Will the dual channel properties be retained if only 1 Gig of the 2Gig stick is utilized?

Suggestions?

If I've confused myself, please be kind. I'm simply looking for the max RAM option, thinking about the future etc...

I am moving to Vista as soon as SP-1 comes out (and is tested).

Yes, adding two 2GB sticks (4GB total) will allow your system to run in dual-channel mode, even if only 3GB can be seen by the operating system.

You can usually find a good deal on memory at NewEgg or other online retailers. I would have done the same the same thing as you - get one stick from Lenovo and add the other myself to save money.

If you add one more 2Gig stick you will have 2x2Gig, that would be your best bet as far as getting the max ram and being prepared for the future.

I've heard it said on these boards that dual channel isn't worth it as you'll never human notice a difference between dual channel and single channel.
