Any Thinkpad adapter with 16V and 4.5A output works with the T42p. This information is printed on the bottom of the adapter.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

Don't use that adapter. See this thread.

ok updated.

A20P AC-Adapter is 72w (16V/A3.5?)

Part number is of the A20P adapter is one of the following:

02K6669
02K6673
02K6677
02K6666
02K6670
02K6674

(Donno if that's a Zero (0) or a O)

Is there any way to know if any of these ac-adapters actual fits in a T42?

Don't do it. It will fit and it will probably work - but there is a fire hazard due to the overload.

Used T4X adapters are easy to get on ebay for $20 shipped. I have 6 or 8.

the 3.5 amp charger will power the machine until it burns out, but will not charge the battery.

16V*3.5A = 56 Watts

A 56W power supply will run some T4x configurations without any drama, but will struggle on others.... it really depends on the exact T4x configuration. In general, its not a great idea to use a 56W power supply with T4x ThinkPads.

Cheers,

I've always wondered about this. No matter what I do to my T42 - I've never been able to get the power consumption over 30W. A 56W adapter does get hot though.

More memory, bigger screen, wireless, bluetooth, etc all translate to more power

How ridiculous.. that 3.5A is REALLY a TYPO. It States from the Manual that's A20P ships with a 72w thus it should be 4.5A and _NOT_ 3.5A.

What i wanted to know what if the connector from this charger FITS in the T42

My old T21 Charger Does NOT fit in my X41.
T21 Charger fits in T42.
T42 Charger fits in X41.

Please lock this thread till i get the Charger for my A20P to test it in my T42.

Thank you for the explanation Bill.

The connectors are the same. I thought you were asking about 3.5 amp chargers, which also fit, but don't work right.

Doesn't make sense. My T21's charger fits into my X41 tablet.

It might if the charger is not a genuine IBM adapter. An aftermarket one could have a slightly different diameter plug, even though the DC input jacks should be the same. As far as I know, none of the "56 watt" IBM adapters have 3.5A ratings. All of the ones I have seen list the current as 3.36A, which is why I sometimes call them 54 watts (16V * 3.36A = 53.76W).
